MAINFRAME DEFENDERS - tactical retrofuturistic strategy game. A computer virus has infiltrated the Stargazer research complex. Most of the robotic units are controlled by the virus. Lead a squad of 4 prototypes on a mission to defend complex mainframe. You'll have to repel assaults, destroy unit fabricators, download valuable data, clear infected nodes, and do more on your way to the deepest parts of the complex. Work with item limitations and drawbacks to build powerful combinations. Destroy your enemies with diverse tactics: overheat them, melt with corrosion, absorb damage, and return fire. But don't rely on a single strategy too much - enemies might have a way to counter it. But above everything else: defend the Mainframe!

  • RETRO STYLE: Graphics, inspired by 80s terminal PC with hybrid synthwave soundtrack.

  • DIVERSE TACTICS: Cook enemy robots to death, bury them under your bullets, eliminate with a single powerful shot, or render your opponents useless with debuffs - this game is designed with a lot of viable strategies in mind.

  • BUILD YOUR SQUAD: Similar to how in card games you have to build your deck, in Mainframe Defenders you have to combine different items with unique abilities, to create an unstoppable squad. Work with item drawbacks or double down on them, creating flawed, yet powerful build!

  • UNIQUE ENEMIES: Enemy squad won't sit idle, though. Each unit has its own role in the squad and designed to counter certain strategies. Pick your targets wisely, or you will lose.

  • PROCEDURAL LEVELS: Hand-made rooms are combined with procedural generation to create random levels. Missions have differing objectives, combined with unique mission conditions. Will you accept the challenge or avoid the unknown and risk falling behind?

  • PROGRESSION SYSTEM: Victory or defeat, the game is not over yet! Unlock new units, each with a unique set of upgrades and load-outs. Unlock new items to bolster your new strategies.

Synthetic Domain is a small team of hobbyists with a passion for making games. We are working with limited resources to deliver quality games focusing on polish and execution. We look at indie games, games from the 90s and 00s for our inspiration, hoping to bring some of the spirit of this era to the modern age.

So much game for so little cost!

Ok, this game is simple enough in it's concept: Turn based combat with robots. However, it's the aesthetics and the smoothness of the mechanics that make this game a GEM!!! First off, the retro look is awesome, and they throw in things like color customization and re-naming the robots you're using. (Little things like that give me so much joy!) So, it's retro, but it's a more modern retro experience! Not to mention the soundtrack ROCKS! I hope they offer it for purchasing at a later date... because I'll buy it if they do. For gameplay I couldn't be more pleased: Turn based mechanics, Action Points (which can be upgraded by issuing certain items to the robots), simple controls. The developers did not set out to reinvent the wheel, but they sure made that wheel look a whole heck of a lot better, and run a lot smoother! If you like sci-fi and turn-based strategy combat games then give this game a shot! Plus, it's only $6 dollars new! (And I got it for eighty nine cents for sale!) You can't get better than this for your money. It's a solid gaming experience for so little cost. Plus there's unlockable robots and items the more you play. A single run can provide you with so much entertainment, and then you earn enough to unlock stuff for your next run and make it even better. So, yes, this is essentially a rogue-lite game. But it is done with such clarity. This game knows exactly what it is, and what it wants to do... And it nails it. Don't play this game if you don't like retro-style graphics. The pictures on the game page are 100% accurate of the gaming experience. Also, they add little filters in the settings to fine-tune exactly the kind of retro you want! (S Video, VHS, Noisless, etc) And also filters for Bloom lighting and such. I had a blast just roaming the settings and preparing for my first run! If you're on the fence, get off the fence and try this game out! The description page is accurate, so I give this game 5 Stars. It deserves it.

Great mechanics, but repetative gameplay

A great looking game with terrific combat mechanics, but neither are used to full effect with such a limited number of mission types and sadly uninspired maps. Gameplay: A turn based strategy roguelite. The mechanics are great. Pick your squad of 4 and go through 15 missions until the final 'defense' mission. Each unit has a starting loadout that can be changed and a unique upgrade path. Walls can be destroyed to open new paths and line of sight. Most weapons generate heat and if you accumulate too much heat you take damage. You can also overheat enemies, but I found this is very difficult to do and the damge isn't worth it. Contrary there are enemies specificially designed to overheat you. Pro tip, kill Heaters first. The biggest issue with the gameplay is there are only 5 mission types and 3 of them require you to just kill all the enemies regardless of the goal. Add that to the shear number of enemies and every battle ends up a battle of attrition. Higher difficulties function the same, but there are more enemies, they have more armor and battles just take longer. There isn't too much strategy, either, since enemies can teleport in anywhere, you always want to keep your squad grouped up and focus fire. There are no missions that require any variety, regardless of the goals. Visuals: Very unique, clean and appealing. Only issue I have is a lack of variety. Every map looks idenctical to the last. Narrative: Not really applicable. You unlock some emails after every succesful run, but you unlock them one at a time. Very slow for half a page of text. Presentation: The inventory and menus are very easy to navigate and you never get enough gear to be overwhelming. Once you understand the mechanics, it becomes easy to pick out which gear you want and what is actually an upgrade. Excellent presentation.

No unfair RNG!

This is classical turn based strategy. It is fair, balanced and fun. Biggest pro: Is has no unfair RNG. There is no "change to hit 99% - critical miss" nonsense I hate about other games of that type. So it is actually tactical. On top music and SFX fit, usability is good and does not drive you mad. Confession: I played in easy skill, and will play in normal skill soon. This game gives you a chance to improve your round-based-strategy skills without kicking your balls.

Very Retro turn based Robot Combat

Think of Battletech without the Merc Plot and pilots, just stripped down to a Robot vs Robot game done in the style of something you'd see on the Commodore of your dreams. That's pretty much what you get. There is a lot of playtime and it's sort of game would of loved way back. However whether it will have that appeal today other than something you'd just play a few times ? What it does it does well though.

Great game - great deal

TLDR; Incredibly solid game design with a lot of heart and replayability. Get it! This is a fully turn-based tactics game. You control 4 robots who can each load 4 equipment items. Game loop: Home phase: In the 'home' phase, you can use currency to shop in the store or buy permanent intrinsic upgrades for your mechs. You can 'lock' up to two items in the shop to buy later. Then you choose a mission - each shows the objective type, difficulty level, and rewards you'll get if you win. In the mission: You take turns in an "alternating activation" style - you spend your mechs' moves and attacks in any order you like, they the enemy all move/attack. Features: "fog of war", fully destructible environment, great and varied status effects and enemy types, environmental hazards/boons, some basic stealth, occasional allies or enemy spawners/repair stations/reinforcements. If you win, you get rewards and back to the Home phase. If you lose the run is over, but you get points towards a new unit unlock and for selectable unlocks based on your progress. If you lose, What's great: The overall game design is downright amazing. There is enough complexity to make play super engaging but not enough to bog anything down. Snappy controls/animations, respects your time! Meta progression - unlock cool new gear that keeps adding to the possibilities. The enemy types, AI, mission types, and difficulty curve are all well designed and provide challenge. Lots of great status effects and build possibilities - this is probably the heart of the game. Fun synthwave music and cohesive (if simple) visuals. The value - how is the price this low! What's bad: Only that these developers haven't put out more games yet! They are working on one though. Highly recommended for anyone who likes turn-based small squad tactics, and nerding out on build possibilities.
