Mad Max

Wether Mad Max is good or bad depends a lot on how many Ubisoft style of openworld games you've played so far. If it would have been the first I think it would rank as one of the best games you've played but personally I rank it as above average. Still as part of the Mad Max franchise it could have been a lot worse. What I liked is the vehicular combat and like the top reviewer said the convoy take outs are by far the highlight of the game. Though vehicular combat becomes trivial once you unlock the thunderpoons (guided missiles). What I didn't like is the beyond meaningless lootgrab and collect achievements. The only things I liked collecting we're the historic relics, but each base or scavenge area you need to clear of scrap and insignia's and nothing to spend it on anymore. It just drove me to insanity. Something Mad Max does very well is that it has a thick atmosphere of humanity's post apocalyptic descent into barbarism. It did strike a bit too close to home though, with all the going on's in the world at the moment. As such I haven't finished the game, though I think I'm very close to it, because I can only imagine it isn't going to end well.

This is a Far Cry-like game with a lot of concepts being pretty much the same: improving your gear, conquering outposts, unlocking the different parts of the map, lots of fighting/surviving… One could argue that it is a Far Cry game in a Mad Max world. The game is atmospheric, and the plot is interesting, but I’d recommend watching the film first to understand the world a bit better. It is a good game but it can get a bit boring after a while, since many of the tasks you need to perform are similar, and require you to collect a LOT of items. You can complete the game in about 20h but if you are a completionist, it can easily rise to 60h.

I paid around 5 euros for it and managed to play it for only 7 hours, but it was fun enough for that time, so it's still worth it. I couldn't make myself play more, not even to finish the story. The world is beautiful, combat is quite fun and satisfing and the caracters are interesting. The one thing that I disliked to the point where I gave up on the game was the repitivity. All games are repetitive to some extent, but this one was too much for me. Basically, if you've been in 3 camps you've seen all of them. Almost copy - paste. Go to camp, beat up everything, search for the 5-10 pieces of scrap and insignas, destroy main oil thingy, good job, go next. Again and again. Car combat? Fun at times, frustrating at times, and the exact same thing again and again. Go faster than the other car, crash harder in the other car, big boom, collect scrap. Story was okay and intrigued me a littel bit at the beginning, but later on I just stopped caring that much. It just feels like a very stripped down ubisoft game in terms of objectives, with a cool but repetitive fighting system taken from the Batman games and a more intriguing but (rightfully, based on the story) barren and empty wasteland. It's a good game for someone who wants to keep busy while doing something else. And if you get it on sale, it might be worth. But for someone looking for something more, it might get boring very quickly.

I am playing this now since 30 hours (still far from the finish line) and I guess it is time to give it the 5 stars it deserves imo. I have so much fun, you have so much freedom and there is so much to do ... and the game looks and plays as you would expect a Mad Max game to look and play. Is it repetetive? Yes, it is - but you don't need to do everything that's on the map, that's up to you. It's also (mostly) up to you what you want to do first. As long as you don't expect a complex story and like the world this plays in you will have fun for a long time. Also, afaik there is no other game out there that does car combat so well (and it never gets old to simply pull the driver out of the seat using the harpoon). Feel the need for speed and fight cars in high speed, infiltrate fortresses, hunt for snipers, search for mines using a dog as sonar ... fight dirty and hard with just two buttons ... all this is this game. Best 5 Euros I've spent for a long time.

If open world post apocalyptic fun sounds good to you, then you will enjoy this game. I think it a blast! Certainly there are more sophesticated open world games out there, but who cares - this is just fun. I like Chumbucket, your half-crazed mechanic who goes with you and amazingly can repair your car from the worst possible damage with a fire extinguisher and a socket wrench in the middle of the desert, with highly entertaining and endearing dialog. Realistic, not really - but fun - heck yeah. Car combat is good. Hand to hand combat is fun. Environment looks cool. Cars feel fast. It's just good. Thanks Devs!
