Just was in for an hour by now, but I must say, it captures the spirit of tortured Furbies quite well.
The soundtrack is awesome! And it is your arsenal. Each weapon is another sound module that you can upgrade and even tweak the knobs (all at once)!
A really nice twin stick shooter. :-)
It's a fun little twin-stick shooter. I like the art. The levels are good. The sound design is very cool. Unfortunaly there are some issues, but overall I like the game.
When the sound is good it's really good, but since the soundtrack is tied to the weapons you've unlocked and have equipped, the soundtrack at the start of the game is very bare-bones and a little grating at times. There's also some voice lines like the "Kosmo Happy" line, which sounds a little loud and grating, and is unfortunately a very common line in the game.
The game seems to play at way too high of a FPS when in full screen for me, and that makes navigating the menus and moving really fast, so I have to play in windowed mode to make the game feel right. I'm not sure if that's due to some GPU setting on my system, or if it's an issue with the game.
The gameplay is fun, but I wish there was an option for like an aim line to be drawn out from your gun, so it's more clear where you're shooting and where you are. Some times it's hard to keep track of what's going on and where you're firing. There is a crosshair, but it's very close to your character (when using a controller) and so you need to look at the enemy to make sure your shots are hitting. Also, the bullets are come out of the gun, so they're kind of offset and a little harder to aim especially when enemies are up close. Also, depending on your loadout, there are extra assistants orbiting you and shooting bullets that kind of look like yours -- it's hard to explain, but it's just difficult to keep track of what's going on sometimes, and it would be easier if there was a line or something that made it easier to keep track of everything.
A fun twin stick shooter with great sound.
I would like to give this 5 stars because of:
- Different worlds that actually feel different because of different movement mechanics and enemies that tie in really well.
- The music and sound, really pleasing noise!
- The modules are fun because they are instruments for both music and destruction.
- Filled to the brim with humor.
- Really captures the LMNC vibes!
- Some nice secrets to be found. (Yes I beat the boss rush)
But there are some things that limit me to 4 stars:
- Can get a bit repetitive when grinding for components.
- Getting stuck on the terrain happens too easily.
- The final boss is more tedium than challenge.
- Some minor bugs.
Look Mum No Computer feels both fresh and familiar. Fresh, due to its unique setting and soundtrack revolving around electronics and modular synthesizers. Familiar, as it gives me a similar joy to playing my childhood favourite, Raptor: Call of the shadows .. frantic action, all gameplay, awesome soundtrack, no handholding, slowly building up your arsenal, etc.
The interactive music highlights both the game's main strength and weakness. The more you upgrade your weapons/synthesizer, the more intricate and rich the music gets. As you start out with zero upgrades, the music is also bare-bones. The upside: it only gets better from here, but you do need to be quite patient. As you're nearing the end, the music does get absolutely amazing!
Related to this is the difficulty curve: it starts out easy, then very slowly picks up .. then the difficulty spikes around the latter half~third of the game. Nonetheless, this latter half more than makes up for the slow start, so don't let this discourage you from picking up the game. It really is a gem! Not just the music and the gameplay mechanics are great, but so are the cute and quirky graphics, the fun bits of dialogue and the overall tone.
About the YT channel tied to this game (also called Look Mum No Computer). You definitely don't have to know it to enjoy the game; I suppose they capture the same upbeat tinkering spirit :) ..and that Sam is the actual mad lad who made the music. That's also what confused me at first: knowing the channel, I kind of expected the game to be more in-depth on how to build electronics or modular synthesizers, but that's not what this is! That would be cool too, but maybe then it wouldn't be as good at being a proper game.
In short, I can only highly recommend you give Look Mum No Computer a try! I'd love Sam & The Bitfather to make more of this in the future!
PS: if the game's effects are straining your eyes, try disabling "Chromatic aberation" and "Bloom" in the settings
