Pass through a shimmering portal into a world teeming with invention, discovery... and evil. An exotic parallel universe is terrorized by a dark being. Alien technology, unearthly treachery, and brain-twisting danger skulk around every craggy cliff and corner. You are summoned on a rescue mission; lives and worlds hang in the balance. Do you have the courage and imagination to leave your world and enter the unknown?
Lighthouse creator Jon Bock invites you to journey to a hand-crafted world of exotic architecture, inventions, and characters. Drawn with brilliant precision and tinged with ageless folktale imagery, Lighthouse is a visual and literal masterpiece that pulls you into its beckoning beam of hope.
You are the beacon of hope in a strange and desolate world.
Fascinating characters provide dues to solve a mystery.
You alone must learn the lessons of technology gone mad.
Complex mechanical devices transport you into an alternate world.
This one is special in my book. It has such a great atmosphere, I played it several times and almost finished. It is similar to Myst in its first person view, navigation system and some visual elements, but the similarity ends where the actual game starts. If a Myst is a nonsensical assembly of switches and buttons you must press and something happens somewhere (I never managed to finish it), Lighthouse is a proper point and click adventure, with dialogues, puzzles and great (for its time) SVGA graphics. Amazing also is that this game sometimes accepts several solutions to problems. It's beautiful, sad, challenging and I recommend it to anybody who likes adventure, puzzles and old school quality.
I played this game when I was very young, and even though the puzzles were too complicated for me then, I found the world exquisite and awe-inspiring.
Playing this game over twenty years later, I am every bit as blown away by the wonderful landscapes and surreal characters that you discover. The puzzles are still challenging, though solvable if you pay close attention. Unlike some other games in this genre, the puzzles make sense.
Because of the straightforward point-and-click mechanic, Lighthouse: The Dark Being has not aged at all in my book. It may be low-resolution, but it is a trip, and an absolute must-play for adventure-game enthusiasts.
I have loved Lighthouse since the day it came out in the 90s. It is a Myst-Like game, where you are tasked with finding out what happened and save some people. The game has many puzzles, some can be kind of confusing, but the puzzles are there and they seem to work find in the Universe created.
The audio is pretty good for the time of release. Many cool sounds can be heard bringing the world to life. The visuals are nice for the time. This is a 90s Sierra classic game people, so of course there not going to be in par with Riven or today's standards.
The game has 7 locations to explore... each with a 'piece' you have to collect, so you do have to visit each one. (The submarine location is the hardest, 2nd hardest is the Volcano maze) There isnt much information or direction in the game really, so it is harder to explore and know what you are suppose to be doing.
I am currently playing the game with the physical CD-ROMS (came with 2, so your constantly 'switching' between discs, I am glad they came out with a digital release though, FINALLY.
Love the nostalgia this game brings back to the table. Next game should be Amber:Journeys Beyond.
One of the best games I have ever played, use to play this so much when I was a kid and now to see this on GOG makes me really excited. Just try this game if you haven't played before.
I rarely write reviews, but I read that 2 star complaint, and I want to say; Im not a nostalgic player. I just heard this game a long time ago, try the demo some 15 yeras ago (or even more, I already forgot even to did this) but because Im a die hard adventurer I always want to try this. So when I saw on GoG instantly buyed it, not waiting for sale.
Thing is I just played the original Myst about a month ago, and Im was very disappointed. Im not a big fan to this genre, but Myst was the first of these kind of games. And maybe this is the only reason people talking about it. Beacuse it was the FIRST. Its story not so well written, you hardly use anything from your inventory, and literally you only picked up one thing at a time, (a blue, or a red page). WTF? You actually can play trough Myst in 5 minutes. Yes, you can read right: FIVE. In Myst the best part how on earth you can get to the Ages, and come back, and the best scene is the center island. But the Ages are huge disappointment. You hardly do anything.
So yeah Lighthouse stole the idea, go to a paralel world, and go places and return. But is has a superb atmosphere. and finally there are some characters. Not mention the 16 different endings. I also love the mechanical wehicles. My absolute favorite was the driller train. You can reach each destination at least 2 differnt ways. There isnt just one route. This game really branches, and you can solve one problem in many different ways.
The guy complains about the Birdman stole things from you? So what? Its not a fault. Its a way. Like the real life, you cannot win every situation. And its from 1996, now 2018. This kind of design was so refreshing. Not many games did this. Heck I even missed the kidnapping at the first time, because I was minding my own business, but Im not realizing I was missed something. Because I solve the problems on my own way, at my own pace.
And yeah thank GOD this game has tons of items. So I recommended Lighthouse.
