Great, atmospheric adventure game
Note: At release, there was a bug affecting some people (myself included) that stopped the game from launching. This has thankfully been rectified. Life is strange is a very atmospheric adventure game about a meek hipster girl (Max) re-uniting with her old best friend, who is rebelling against a world she feels is against her (Chloe). Together, you work to solve the mystery of Chloe's more recent best friend's sudden disappearance. The events play out in a Telltale-style adventure (though the player is given slightly more agency here), where you make lasting decisions that may affect large chunks of the story. While this might work on its own as a compelling adventure game, what truly elevates it is Max's ability to rewind time, allowing her to rethink the things she says and does, as well as alter the course of events in pretty far-reaching ways. The game presents you with some pretty interesting and difficult moral dilemmas, and oftentimes Max's time-bending doesn't make the decisions any easier to make. Tying together this intriguing narrative is a standout art style that makes use of a lot of stylized hand-drawn art to give the game a dreamy, nostalgic feel. Add to that a brooding indie rock soundtrack, and you have a game that drowns you in atmosphere, and adds up to an experience you won't soon forget. (The dialog can be cringe, occasionally trying too hard to sound like "hip teen" lingo, but I think it helps fully realize the game's already idealized vision of what an American art school must be like. If you think this will bother you though, you can knock one star off my score! It is worth looking past the occasional "hella"!)
