Not real Larry, but fun for what it is
The game may be a LSL game in name only, but the 3D exploring and minigaming make for a fun enough game. The game's cast of characters is pretty varied, even if heavily reliant on stereotypes, and the voice acting is good. The plot won't win any awards, but it holds everything together. There a lot of different minigames, ranging from Simon Says to Tapper to rhythm games. The controls can be hard to grasp at first, but with some practice most of them become fun instead of a chore. (For example, I really disliked Quarters and Trampoline at first. Quarters was hard to win using the mouse, and Trampoline seemed to ignore some of my keypresses. After a while both became easy and maybe even a bit addictive.) The most annoying thing about LSLMCL is the out-of-place childish humor. A lot of wind gets passed and other bodily functions are in the limelight as well. If the game went for more of a high school drama spoof thing, it would make more sense on the whole. While the toilet humor is there, it's not the only genre the game's going for, luckily... The GOG version is, as the title implies, uncut and uncensored. There's nudity, sex and foul language and if it's done well enough, if that's what you're after. It's not porn, though. From a technical standpoint, the game has aged well. Antialiasing and anisotropic filtering can be forced from the GPU driver (for Nvidia, at least), and the game allows for setting a widescreen resolution in its ini files (namely Larry.ini). It also plays nice with >60Hz monitors. I played it on a 144Hz monitor and everything was smooth. It must be said though that having vertical sync enabled did result in jerky movement on both 60 and 144 hertz modes, so your mileage may vary. Good game, if something of a mixed bag.

Not the first to say it...
...but it bears repeating: this game really isn't all that bad. The pre-rendered videos have some solid chuckles and the dialogue system for seducing women is a neat concept that both rewards success and encourages failure. And the mini-games can be fun... ...to a point. They become very repetitive very quickly and failures in those portions of the game are enraging hair-pulling moments that'll send you running for a good ole' fashion book. Paper, unplugged no-fail bookmark-savepoint books. The sex and nudity are cheeky but grow old quickly. Al Lowe was smart to hold back because the quest for nipples is what we really want, whether we know it or not. Otherwise we'd buy porn. When this game was new, I paid fifty bucks for the game, wanted my money back, and black bars blocked out the naughty bits. But this one's uncensored and it's under ten bucks. A solid buy. Then go out and get the older Leisure Suit Larry games by Al Lowe. They'll blow this one out of the water. And while you're at it, get Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist, if you can find it. It's Lowe's best work, in my humble opinion, and is begging for a remake even more than Leisure Suit Larry.

Unfunny and unplayable
While the series is known for cheap laughs and juvenile humor, this entry is just plain lazy. Voice acting is very well done and the appearance of several licensed songs on the soundtrack is a nice bonus, but the ugly character models, 90's era console graphics, and repetetive twitchy "gameplay" are pitiful. An entire game based on several tedious mini-games is bad enough, but the unresponsive (or deliberately adjusted in some cases-to create artificial difficulty spikes) controls on keyboard and mouse make almost all of them unwinnable without a gamepad. Quitting ("wimping out,") or failing often enough to get a pity round from the developers isn't fun at all. No thanks. If the makers had to put in multiple ways to skip the actual gameplay, you know it has failed. One star for audio, one for the inclusion of a smart-mouthed monkey.

The best of the series
Yes, I said it. Hear me out. Here are the 3 complaints everyone has about this game: "Mindless mini-games"- Yeah, they get repetitive. Honestly though I would take any of them rather than have to sit through another insult duel segment of some Monkey Island game. For some reason everyone loved those though. In Cum Laude, you put up with mostly tolerable mini-games that can go on longer than they should so you can great to some great writing. "It's not an adventure game!"- You do not solve infamous Sierra logic puzzles, true. I contend that this is not a bad thing. Sierra puzzle logic were what eventually killed adventure games in the first place. People wear rose colored glasses when they look back on those. "It's immature boob jokes aimed at 12 year olds!"- Okay, THIS one...seriously? What the heck serious mature games were these people playing? Because they sure as heck weren't Leisure Suit Larry games, the franchise where you distract pimps by playing porno on the TV and die of an STD if you don't wear a condom after typing "f*** hooker". This is like fans of the movie Porky's calling American Pie immature. Without the blindness of nostalgia, Cum Laude definitely has the best comedy writing of any game in the series. It is the game's primary strength and where it shines. Once you get through some repetitive, but tolerable mini-games, you get to the conversations which are the delicious meat of the game. Much like David Lynch perfectly captured the anxiety of meeting the in-laws in Erasure head, the conversation mini-game here perfectly captures the social mind field of hitting on chicks. Then there's the countless humorous monologues you get when Larry examines items; there's always another one around the corner as you explore the campus. Ruining some hippy's hacky sack game never gets old. So, it's a funny enjoyable experience once you get past the mini-games and realize that a lot of the original LSL jokes have aged as well as Ray Jay Johnson.
