Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.
The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready for some classic dungeon-crawling first person perspective party-based RPG action? Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?
Use the Dungeon Editor to build entirely new adventures and challenges for other players to solve!
Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets, and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs, and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weapons.
Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills, and traits.
Pure-blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares, riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors, and more.

Legend of Grimrock does what it wants to do well, so if you want a real-time dungeon crawler that is all about starting at floor #1 and getting to the bottom of things, this game has got you covered.
It has a well-made dungeon full of corridors to explore, doors to open, monsters to defeat, puzzles to solve and secrets to uncover. However, it is not a full large-scope RPG in the vein of Wizardry or Might&Magic. There are no money or shops to spend it in, no quests (other than "get to the end"), no NPCs to talk to - just your party and the dungeon.
Cool little game, but do not expect it to be what it is not.
An old-scool first-person dungeon crawler RPG with a clear focus: survive in a harsh and atmospheric enviroment with challenging puzzels, traps and monsters. The game has no unneccessary things like quests, journals, shopkeepers or grinding, only the main important elements. The game looks and works impressive when come to think about the fact that it has made only four people.
The real-time system of the game works very well but sometimes it feels bit too fast-paced. When you release a movement button after a step, the party still takes another step further. In combat it's best to avoid getting hit so you end up move wildy around the enemy if there is any room for that. The combat sytem is clear and simple, but it forces eyes to be focused on bottom right of the screen. The runic spell castig system is nice but I didn't like how the spells have level requirements thus preventing you to cast them when you have not spent skill points wisely.
The overall game experience is straightforward without any hand-holding. I liked the character development system of the game, unlike D&D system with stupid equipment restrictions. I had couple of good playthroughs with different party setups. I recommend.
Legend of Grimrock is exactly what it promises to be - an old school first person dungeon crawler made in a modern engine.
True, this brings across some of the genre's foibles as well - the interface is a tad clunky at times, especially when trying to give your poisoned fighter that vital antidote or trying to cast a complicated spell on the fly. And it does get a little bit formulaic at points.
Overall though, it's great as both a coffee break game and a sitter, meaning that it's a good play in any situation. The puzzles are interesting without being frustrating, and the graphics and sounds are both polished and run smoothly.
If you're a fan of dungeon crawlers, you owe it to yourself to get Grimrock.
How many hours had i spent in the deep dungeons of Lord Chaos? Dunno. But since those glorious days on my ATARI ST i ever wondered why nobody tried to build a game in the likeness of "Dungeon Master" or "Chaos Strikes Back" for the modern PC or Mac. I've waited till December 14th 2011, when news arrived me that... who? Almost Human? Never heard of them! ... were programming a game called "Legend of Grimrock", which looks like - oh! the wait is over! - "Dungeon Master". For the modern man and his computer, of course. Every week i came back to the site of the studio, hoping to catch some news about the game. I was worried: What, when they don't catch the spirit of DM? What, when "Legend of Grimrock" wasn't a good game at all, full of bugs, plot-holes and other monstrosities?
Then i watched GoGs Spring Conference. GoG will sell "Legend of Grimrock"? Good news, indeed, good news. Bought it & loaded it yesterday. Played it. I love it. Thank you Allmost Human, thank you GoG. It is of course not a fancy openworld game like "Skyrim", or a beasty like "Fallout 3". Its just me, the dungeon, those monsters and the way down, deeper and deeper. Its easy to learn. Just like they made it in the old days. But: Much better graphics, nice light effects, great monsters. Not to forget about the puzzles, the sound effects, the feeling of being trapped in an everlasting dungeon with who-knows-what-might-come around the corners. Now i am hoping that somebody makes some DM- and CSB-Dungeons for Grimrock. Maybe Allmost Human can get the licence from FTL for the original cards, sounds, names? And i fully agree with destructoid.com, who gave "Legend of Grimrock" 95% and a raving revue. Surely is "Legend of Grimrock" not perfect. But imho it is as close to perfect for a dungeon crawler game as you can get it nowadays.
I don't know if having played dungeon crawling games like Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master as a child influences my review, but I must say that Legend of Grimrock is excellent.
Beautiful design, interesting puzzles and secrets, and absolutely wonderful monsters have had me glued to my computer ever since I got this game.
