Description
Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! A Flawed Diamond In The Rough

A background of my experience with this game genre: I'm older than video games. I have played almost all the games in this genre. There are two Grand Champion games in this category that, IMHO, have still not been bested - Rogue (original) and Dungeon Master (by FTL). This game earns 75%, upgraded to 4 Stars for the website's system. Breakdown: 75% - Excellent graphics, especially the creatures. Entertaining puzzles, ranging from very easy to a couple of head-scratchers. A few will frustrate people with poor reflexes, but those usually open "bonus" locations rather than a critical path. Usually. Character creation was interesting due to skill choices for each character. I enjoyed fighting - you have to think on your feet and, at times, use the dungeon layout for protection from many untimely deaths. I've read criticism about, "just going in a circle to fight," but that is over simplification. You can fight head-on. Or you can try to get behind them for your Rogue to unleash powerful back-stabs. In some places, you can use the dungeon itself to help you defeat the enemies. Doors are friends. LoG has a good balance of fighting, exploring & puzzle solving. It's NOT an action RPG - it's real-time, turn-based fighting. LoG has an editor, so, hopefully, you can enjoy many player creations. 15% = Meh. Fighting items are sparse and repetitive. I used 3 weapons for each fighter. Weapons can be used by anyone, but only the Rogue is best suited for using many. Creature variety is decent, but not enough to suit me. Too much repetition. LoG borrows a great deal of game design from predecessors, but doesn't innovate. Too few spells. I used a half dozen, never using Air or Ice. Skill trees go to 50 Pts - you will never get close to 50. 10% = HATED. End "story?" Lame, obvious, done better elsewhere. Final Boss battle is insanely OBNOXIOUS. Most annoying End Boss fight of ANY genre I can recall. A BUY for dungeon crawler fans.

Very good old-school dungeon crawler

If you liked games like Dungeon Master, Black Crypt and Eye of the Beholder series, then you'll be at home with this little gem. Play it, you'll never regret, and the sequel is even better. But play this first.

Too hard

Enjoyable for a while, but the mazes/puzzles are too hard to play it, unless you really invest time and thought in it. Comparing to, for e.g., Ultima Underworld 2, it's not even a 3 out of 10, with UU2 being 10.

Modern classic

I was going to put this at the end, but then I realized it's something important: I like this game very much, but I lost interest. I don't think I'll finish it. If this sounds like you, keep an eye for that. I'm too young to have played the classic dungeon crawlers this game imitates, but I feel that, by delivering such beautiful graphics and sound design, this game brings me closer to what I would've felt back in those days playing one of those games. The game just flows. As they say, easy to get started, difficult to master. You will get stuck though, and you will thank your particular god for the Internet and the guides therein.

The graphics updated dungeoncrawl

First off the things I really liked about this game: - There are no elves, gnomes or other typically good cratures in this game. There a Minotaurs, Humans, Insectoids and Lizardmen, which I find more suiting for the typical prison situation. - The maps of the dungeons are well designed, keeping secrets and hidden items in sometimes unexpected places. - The enemy design is really good, from the ai to the models and their sound and textures. - The looks of the dungeon is as realistic as it could get. - The difficulty steep is pretty good balanced. - The magic system is great and also one of the only ways to actually break the game, as the character can cast any spell as long as you know the rune combination. Now to the things I didn't like that much: - There are poisonous enemies, ones that set you on fire and then there are holes everywhere in the floor. In the end you fight them all. I've rarely had a final boss fight this tedious and frustrating in a long time. - Who built this dungeon? The deeper you descend the weirder the surroundings get. There are no transitions between the areas. - The ending is kind of weird too. Why did we fight that cube? To get free? - Some of the puzzles are just plain annoying. All in all I wish for more games like this, because after all it is fun to play it.
