bittersweet

I loved the first season and I really liked the episodes 5-7. In my opinion episode 7 is the pinnacle of the whole series. Episode 8, the final entry in the series, is a real disappointment though. I'm not against open endings, but here nothing seems right. The finale is totally anticlimactic, the scenes are boring, there are no puzzles to solve - it's just like a rushed, careless "let's get over with it"-tone in this episode. And you'll be over with episode 8 very fast, as it's clearly the shortest episode of the whole series. The whole matter with this weak finale is especially sad, as many of the beta-testing players opened threads and tried to communicate these issues to the developers. The developers didn't seem to be interested to react to these imho justified concerns and so the TLD-saga stays in my memory as a bittersweet experience with seven good to great episodes and a very disappointing finale.

Of feathers and other worlds

Many games have have received episodic releases in the modern day, but the episodes often tend to vary wildly in quality, particularly in terms of story. The Last Door, over the course of two seasons, has never had that problem. The visuals, while lovely in their own way, are deliberately vague so as to shift focus on two specific aspects: story and sound. The writing for this series is spectacular and, while an obvious homage to Lovecraft, still retains a unique, disturbing identity. The central mystery is well-crafted and revealed at a pitch-perfect pace which keeps your riveted from the off. The sound design, as with season one, is the real star here. The weather effects and background sounds put you in the heart of London and isles of Ireland in the 19th century, the sound effects used to perfection to put you off your ease and genuinely startle you and the soundtrack is, once again, beautiful and melancholy. Now that Game Kitchen and Phoenix Online Studios have shown us what they're capable of, I hope they continue putting out games with this level of quality.

A solid conclusion to the mystery!

I recently finished Season 1 of The Last Door and found it a fun, interesting little point 'n' click game, with a strong central mystery that didn't completely come together by the end of its four episodes. Of course, there was always a Season 2 in the pipeline with a view to finishing the story and answering the lingering questions, and I'd say that The Game Kitchen accomplished that fairly well here. The gameplay and art style remains much the same this go around, and I'm pretty fond of both. I've always found this kind of art style appealing, and even without a lot of definition I feel that the themes really stand out well. Gameplay consists of lots of pointing and clicking, as well as solving a myriad of puzzles. I found a few of them a tad maddening here, moreso than I did in the first season. I'm ashamed to say that I got so stumped a few times I resorted to a walkthrough. Yep, I'm that guy and I'm not proud. I can't say that I enjoyed Season 2 as much as the first, despite being grateful for the answers I was given. I think knowing less in that first season meant that you truly felt some of the creepy terror as you wandered around attempting to figure out what was going on, whereas here there's a clearer picture being painted and you don't feel as captivated by it. Still, I'm glad I played through both seasons and the little minisodes. There was love and care poured into these games and, while not perfect, they should form a part of any self-respecting point 'n' clicker's collection.

Decent Conclusion to a Creepy Mystery

The Last Door: Season 2 is a direct sequel to the first game and sums up the chilling mystery in a satisfying way, at least in my opinion. Like the first game, the story is set in England in the late 1800's. The gameplay is point-and-click intensive, centered on collecting items and solving puzzles by figuring out what to do with objects or how to combine them. There is no dying or losing, you are just simply completing the puzzles and tasks as you learn more of the tale. The puzzles seem tougher now than in Season 1, requiring you to travel to multiple locations within a given episode, rather than sticking to one, main location like in the first season. The game is improved in a variety of ways, with more "detailed" closeups of puzzles and objects, more complex environments, and some streamlined features such as hints being readily accessible during the puzzle they refer to. The story remains unsettling as the mystery of the occult activities gets deeper, expanding to new characters and locations. I have seen complaints that this game explains too much and while it is true that the final chapter has a lot of "flashback" scenes to explain the motives and activities of the "Four Witnesses," there is still plenty of mystery left over when the game is over, and much more to contemplate. It ties nicely into the previous season with callbacks and revelations which explain some of what was left unanswered, previously. The narrative eventually delves into oppressively dark and confusing places, which will please or alienate players based on their taste. Overall I was satisfied with this follow up to Season 1 and would certainly recommend it to fans of point-and-clicks as well as fans of classic horror.

Odd, wierd, bizarre story in a good way.

Formulaic point click adventure with 8 bit graphic retro style, but nothing can hold down a good story in my opinion. I gave season one five stars out five, because I like how season one ended upon a teaser. I think with Last Door I was more into the journey than the destination. This season two reveals to much for me as I am a love a mystery type of person.
