Short but beautiful

Wow! What a game... I think I'd better list the "negatives", to better show that actually there are none. First of all, let's be clear: this game is quite short. In fact, I was debating whether or not to give 5 stars only because of this. In the end, I think the price is fair for what you get (especially if you buy it on sale), so 5 stars are well deserved. Secondarily, this is more of a graphic novel (although "graphic" may seems a stretch in this particular case...) than a true point-and-click adventure, in the sense that the game is easy. Puzzles are not really challenging, I got stuck only once just because I overlooked a dialog option. Nonetheless, I think it's fine: if you were to spend too much time between one step and the other, you'd loose all the immersion. Because this game is all about immersion. In fact, I've finished it in one day but not in one seat. I had to take a break from time to time because it was "too much" to bear at once. About the graphics, many people find them ugly, others say they contribute even more to the immersion. Personally, I was a kid when CGA was a thing and I don't remember even 320x240 to be so poorly detailed. I believe they went a bit too far with it but, even so, it serves the purpose indeed. Lastly, the story itself is not very original: I could recognize references to Edgard Allan Poe (not Lovecraft, as some may say), Dead Poets Society, The Name of the Rose, a bit of The Shining and even Donnie Darko. If you're Italian like me, you may see a hint of Profondo Rosso as well (although developers have all Spanish names, so I may be making this one up) and I'm sure more enfranchised people will find even more references. Nonetheless, the story is very well narrated and all this tropes blend into each other seamlessly. In fact, this "lack of originality" may as well be seen as a "wise use of what works instead of trying something new that may or may not be worth it".

A movie rather than a game

The idea of a modern point & click game, especially a horror themed one, is extremely intriguing, but it seems like the "game" aspect of it was lost somewhere in development. Choices are extremely limited, and exploration isn't really rewarded. Instead, you're there to advance the story in as linear a progression as possible. In fact, this game goes against the standard point & click formula, where new revelations open new dialogue trees. Finding something new about a place I was exploring, I wanted to question the people in it about it, but I simply couldn't. It hardly makes you invested in the story. Rather it takes you out of it. Not that the story is that interesting to begin with. You simply start with a horror trope, and continue with some mysterious revelations peppered throughout. And although the trope interested me, everything beyond it didn't. You can get ten times the effect by reading an H.P. Lovecraft story - even the ones only a few pages long. As for the visuals, they leave a lot to the imagination - too much in fact. Things are so pixelated, what looked to me like a stain on a wall was actually a coat. It takes pixel hunting to another dimension. Luckily, it doesn't affect the gameplay too much, seeing as puzzles are either extremely obvious or the "try everything with everything" type. Sadly, both types hinder your progress. And since The Last Door is a movie masquerading as a game, that's a problem. It seemed that no matter how easy and straightforward a puzzle was, I was forced to solve it in a very specific way, and at a very specific time. Meaning some items you can't collect, despite knowing you need them, and doing something as trivial as cutting something becomes a chore, because you're not using the correct item to cut it with. All in all, The Last Door is a movie I'd be interested in seeing, if it got rid of the few gameplay segments it desperately clings to, to be able to call itself a game.

Not worth it

Well, this is gonna be one of those games that will remind me not to buy anything solely based on the review score. I like adventure and horror games. When I first saw this one, I thought it would be a worthy horror/adventure title but turned out to be a disappointment. First thing you need to know is that Last Door is not a complete game, story-wise. To get the full closure, you also need to buy Last Door 2, so keep that in mind. Having finished both games now, I have to say that I don't like the story either. *Spoiler alert from now on* The two games tell us about a group of people who come together to find a way to lift the "veil" that was put over the eyes of the mankind long ago, but they want to do so without incurring the wrath of some crow monster guarding it. They believe that the "first language", which gives the ability to create, lays beyond the veil, past the monster. This all reminds me of the luciferian philosophy that speak ill of God for banishing mankind so that they wouldn't reach a "god-like" status, while portraiting satan as the good guy helping humans. There are lots of eyes, lots of red, secret meetings, masks, robes, candles etc in the game. Thigs what the current secret societies are usually known for. Call them illuminati, skull and bones, freemasons or whatever you like. This is gonna sound biased (and probably political but the ) but suffice to say that such secretive organizations who meet in robes and masks are up to no good. If you don't want a game that tries to make such people look like good guys working for the good of the humanity, then steer clear of it. The only impression it has left on me is illuminati propaganda. However, if you don't care much for such things and only interested in the gameplay; it's a point and click game, the pixel graphics aren't bad, there's some nice music and jump scares here and there, puzzles not too hard. Up to you to make the decision.

Really, it's amazing!

When I first played The last Door I was a bit put off by the graphics. I don't normally like this style, but giving it a chance I ended up being swept off my feet. I love this game. Why? For me it was firstly the sound design, it added to the atmosphere tenfold. It's amazing how taking away the background music can make a newly discovered room seem unsetteling and off. Or how a simple stroke of a piano tone can make you jump in your chair. The gameplay is good, with the puzzles being around medium difficulty. I like the story too, although I'm sure I'm missing the meaning behind some of the quotes as I haven't read HP Lovecraft. I just like snooping around creepy old mansions.

lovecraftian gem with awesome music

in this game, the pixelised rendering is less a tribute to older games than a way to stimulate the imagination. And the effect is amplified by one of the best soundtrack i've seen on an indie game. Carlos Viola's music and sound effects will carry you into the game, help build a sens of impending doom, and make the whole experience really memorable.
