The Original Killing Time

A sophisticated shooter laced with gallows humor. Killing Time is no shallow grave. Its depth is well-conceived. Puzzle solving and strategic thinking are placed at a premium. The visceral violence is complemented by paranormal graphics and a super(natural) storyline. Killing Time is a fright-fest for the true aficionado of first-person corridor mayhem.

OST in MP3 format is included! (Check inside the folder called "Bonus")

A gem with some minimal issues.

Killing Time is unlike a lot of its peers in the 'doom clone' vein in that it is practically a first person shooter metroidvania, with a lot of exploration and collecting items and abilities necessary to progress into the next area of an open map. If that sounds interesting to you, the game's intriguing storytelling only adds fuel to the exploratory fire as throughout the world you will find markers that when approached play cutscenes of pre-rendered actors in-game. The game's story is told almost exclusively through these 'ghosts' showing how the island setting came to be as it is. In an era known for horrible (and often hilarious) acting in video games, Killing Time is oddly... good. The characters' personalities are all distinctive from each other and are often outright entertaining. Tess Conway in particular steals the show as the mysterious, manipulative heiress pulling the strings that set the stage for the game's plot. Now as for the gameplay. Outside of its metroidvania trappings, you'll be very familiar with most of the mechanics going on here. Its a mix of running around and shooting outlandish enemies laced with a variety of puzzles, some better than others. The endgame for instance is one thing I'll have to make exception for, it's dreadful and almost requires a guide. None the less, there is something hooking about Killing Time. Maybe its the soundtrack, with its slew of atmospheric, creepy, and sometimes outright whimsical songs culminating with a jazz band singing the credits theme (Time Trapped Isle, if you wish for a quick Youtube of it. It has no right to be as rambunctious as it is, it's wonderful lol.) Maybe its the plot which kept me going on, anxious to find out what finally happened. Maybe its that the gameplay is actually a lot of fun and contains some wonderfully fun tools such as flamethrowers, tommy guns and even molotovs. Its a combination of all of the above. Its not wholly perfect, getting stuck on corners sucks. But it's so worth it.

Great Game, Buy the remaster.

Since I bought this game earlier this game earlier this year and Resurrected by the great people at Nightdive recently released, I would like to put in my 2 cents into the ring of option surroundeding this game. First off the good, I really like the premise and the fact you can freely explore the island and collect the keys in any order, is really neat for an fps released during the 90s, Killing Time is basically BioShock crossed with Doom, both progression and setting wise. Now for the bad, let's start with comparability, I mainly play my PC games in my Laptop which has windows 11 installed and let me tell you, DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME WITHOUT THE COMMUNITY PATCH! Not only you don't get mouse support, the games graphics get all out of whack with the weapon sprites being outside of the game and the world itself in a small box, so do yourself a favor and install the community patch, you can get it here, http://cubanraul.altervista.org/kt/index.htm Another set back is that sometimes it seems like your just wandering around and some of the puzzles are a bit obtuse. But since that the remaster is out now, buying this version could be considered a bad move because not only Nightdive have done an amazing job remastering this game, this version comes free if you buy it, so tldr, great game, bad compatibility(on windows 11 at least) without patches, buy Resurrected.

Good old FPS - controls can be fixed...

It ain't Doom, but the shooting action is good and the presentation is pleasing to the eye. The "ghostly flashbacks" add to the unnerving atmosphere as they also add to the story. This game was developed for a console, so the keyboard controls of the PC version are pretty rough, and they're hardcoded in. Grab an older version of Xpadder for free (or pay for a newer one). It will allow you to, while it runs in the background, map keys to your PC-compatible game controller. This will restore the fun of the original gameplay.

Not enough for 1996 title.

The original version of Killing Time got a lot of fame on 3DO. And it's easy to guess why. 3DO never had enough games, so, having a dedicated FPS game with digitized actors felt pretty awesome. Especially since this game was released right after the HUGE hardware price drop. For many people it was, like, their first game on their new and shiny console. So, yeah, everybody loved the game on 3DO. Especially since the main idea was pretty interesting too. Long story short, it was an “open world” version of DOOM in the setting that felt a lot like The 7th Guest. Players traveled around mansion and collected stuff to learn the truth and defeat the bad guy at the end. Now here comes the PC version that was released a year later. So, yay, or nay? I'd say, neither. I mean, sure, this port did a lot of things right. Clearly, developers understood the fact that FPS on PC should compete with those fancy new games there. And 1996? It was a year of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. So, while keeping the original idea, this version adds a bit more complicated levels and also a second boss at the end. Which will determine the ending (there are two endings now with the original one from 3DO being “bad”). Sounds cool, huh? Unfortunately, since gameplay here is much faster than in the original version, having a single mansion as an entire thing doesn't feel enough. The game feels surprisingly small for PC title. That's the problem number one. Another problem is... it doesn't look as good. The original 3DO version had digitized actors for both spirits AND enemies. This one? Only spirits and even those look poor. Also, soundtrack is way, WAY worse. So, in conclusion, PC version of Killing Time isn't as bad as you've probably heard from those who loved the original. It's a nice little game and it totally deserves some attention. It's just it arrived a little too late and was unable to be as cool as some other PC titles back in 1996. It just can't offer enough as a PC title and that's it.

If you ready for dated controls, try it

Well, I've completed it recently and ready to review it. This is an old and console game, so... Physics: -Dated, especially moving. Even remapped to ASWD you mouse will move you, there is no mouse look. Jumping is mostly useless (somebody called if 'bunny hop' and was 100% correct!). Strafing and moving forward can get you temporary stuck when facing some walls Video: -The resolution is fixed, seems to be 640x480 or some sort of early SVGA modes, but it is sufficient to keep the HUD conveniently-sized -Textures are OK bearing in mind the age of the game Gameplay: -You have a freedom exploring the map and the progress sequence is not much fixed, but if you consider yourself so smart not to stick to the design sequence (like I did) you will find yourself backtracking too much -Difficulty is fine and on the condition you move with caution it is easy to keep up with it -Only one small section involving acrobatics which is challenging considering dated movement physics; (but you just have to stick to thin lines and enter the section from the correct side) -Enemies killed don't respawn, dropped items (except for life boosts) don't disappear -There is automap Level design: - Mostly nice but simplified by today standards, all sections are with their own theme and predominating enemies - Only one section of the mansion is awful in it's obsolete design with irregulary-shaped small cubiculas. Brings some nausea though. The rest are balanced in terms of size and enemy per area - Found some secrets and even Easter eggs -Interesting idea for motion-capture cutscenes played directly in game to follow the story Audio: - Handful of music tracks, good and atmospheric - Sound effects - fine, but quality is quite low Stability and compatibility: Minor issues with cutscenes (probably due to codec). Played under old Vista SP2 32-bit with GeForce G105M So if you are into old console games and really know what this means, especially in terms of controls, give it a try!
