One of the best stories ever told.

This might be more an interactive novel than an actual point-and-click adventure, but don't let that misguide you: Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth is for me one of the best games in recent years. Everything about it - the atmospheric music, the painted backgrounds and artstyle, even the voice acting - collaborate to accent the gripping story that is the centerpiece of this experience, all revolving around a small village in England in the 12th century and the lives, past and present, of the characters that are for one reason or another attracted to it. You will control three of them in different times - Philip the monk, Jack the outlaw and Aliena the lady, and through their actions you will write much more than their fate. I was in tears when I reached the end of this journey, and not many games (or books) have managed to accomplish this feat on myself. I knew Daedalic from their Deponia series, but I honestly believe that they really have outdone themselves with this title. I would recommend this to any adventure game fan, especially those who have an interest in realistic representations of the Middle Ages. 10/10

An awkward but faithful adaptation

I think the book is the superior experience, but wow it was so fun to see the characters and world be realized and come to life like this. The game can often flounder and put you off with strange pauses in dialogue, point and click adventure leaps of logic and missing or bugged animations. But when it is at its best, the music, the art and the voice acting really step it up to produce an exceptionally striking narrative. If only momentarily. I wish the game had commited more to the characters inner feelings and lives, that's where it really shined for me. Definitely a must recommend for any fans of the source material. But if you're not already a fan of the book I'd wait for a sale. The game could've been a lot more competently made, but I think the devs must've been huge fans of the book to really nail the spirit of the source material like this.

Another interactive story

The book was amazing and I had some expectations about this game. But it's not a game. It's beautiful visually and it does a decent job of telling the story, but there is nothing to do, other than follow the very linear plot. Disappointing, because I know that Daedalic can make real adventure games.

A wonderful experience

This game has superb atmosphere and an extremely good story. It is well worth playing through. The voice acting is top notch for the most part. Gameplay isn't bad unless you want some sort of action game... but it's easy to tell from any descriptions of this game that it is not an action game. It's much much more than a graphic novel but slightly less in gameplay that a full on old school adventure game. I actually enjoyed the very novel idea of adding ideas to your inventory so that you could use them on people to talk about those ideas. Very neat. There are a number of quicktime events which aren't necessarily my favorite thing, but they weren't bad or overly difficult. Basically this is a truly fantastic story with excellent characters and stunning art and visuals wrapped up in gameplay that is halfway between a visual novel and an adventure game. If that sounds even somewhat tolerable to you... I highly recommend the experience.
