Great callback to '90s adventure games

Kathy Rain looks and feels like a classic '90s LucasArts adventure game but follows a more modern design where you almost always know where to go and what to do next, eliminating the guesswork that was a common problem with the older titles. The puzzles are perfectly logical (if not entirely obvious here and there) and there are just enough hints to keep you on the right path, so you're unlikely to get stuck if you pay attention. The game's story is quite compelling, starting off mundanely enough before taking a turn for the weird and unusual, with an occasional Twin Peaks or I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream (the game, not the short story) vibe. The characters are believable, the titular Kathy being particularly likeable, and they're all very well acted. The presentation is rounded out by detailed hand-drawn graphics kept in the '90s aesthetic, and really nice and atmospheric music. The only drawback to Kathy Rain I can think of without nitpicking is the ending which leaves a number of questions unanswered, some of them rather big. Everything else I could name is a technical matter and most likely due to the limitations of Adventure Game Studio, which is none of the dev team's fault. I can very much recommend this game to anyone who enjoys adventure games, particularly classic titles from the '90s by the likes of LucasArts, Sierra or Revolution, as well as fans of good storytelling.

Un peu court quand même...

Un point'n click intéressant, un peu court, qui m'a fait penser à la série des Blackwell, tant par les graphismes que l'histoire orientée autour de la famille et d'un mystère, et un poil de paranormal. Les énigmes sont simples, on progresse rapidement sans être bloqué

Un bon pnc qui privilégie le scénario

"Kathy Rain" fait partie de ces pnc récents ayant été accueillis très chaleureusement par la communauté des amateurs de jeux d'aventure. Et il y a de quoi: atmosphère prenante, bande-son et voix particulièrement léchés et réussis, décors soignés. Vous incarnez Kathy Rain, une jeune étudiante au passé un peu troublé, qui se retrouve à enquêter sur un étrange accident arrivé à son grand-père, désormais décédé, quelques années auparavant. Le tout dans les années 90. Il semblerait bien que des choses un peu bizarres ce soient passées à Conwell Springs... Au fur et à mesure que le jeu progresse, la tonalité se fera de plus en plus fantastique, avec une limite entre imagination et réalité bien difficile à discerner. Les + * Le jeu est très fluide; on est rarement coincés et l'on se prend à jouer plusieurs heures d'affilée, ce qui rend ce jeu accessible, à mon avis, à un plus large public que les amateurs de point'n'click * L'ambiance et l'histoire - au final, en enquêtant sur ce qui est arrivé à votre grand-père, c'est le propre passé de votre personnage que vous investiguez. * La toute fin laisse entendre la possibilité d'une suite... :) Les moins * Les joueurs ayant l'habitude des pnc trouveront sans doute le jeu un peu trop facile, un poil trop linéaire et court, * Dans le détail de l'histoire, on peut être un peu perdus... pas sûr d'avoir eu toutes les réponses en fin de jeu * On aurait aimé des personnages secondaires un peu plus fouillés (Eileen) * La fin, qui tombe résolument dans le fantastique, peut déplaire à certains Vous aimerez Kathy Rain si: * vous êtes amateur de fantastique et de paranormal (Twin Peaks/XFiles), * vous cherchez à passer un bon moment, pas trop long * vous cherchez un pnc pas trop compliqué, qui vous guidera par la main (subtilement, pas trop évident non plus) sans trop d'énigmes obtuses voire aucune * plus globalement si vous aimez les point and click, il s'agit effectivement d'une référence récente qui vous plaira certainement.

Nice one, with a good interface and interesting puzzles. Also, they are logical and not very difficult, so casual adventure gamers might solve this without a walkthrough. I did not like that when leaving and entering a szene, you have to wait for an animation, but it is not too long, so it is okay. And the story gets kind of confusing and there are some loose ends and open questions, but also here not too bad.

A promising adventure game

'Kathy Rain: A Detective is Born' immediately captured my attention when I saw its beautiful pixel art and its mystery premise. But, is it any good? If 'Kathy Rain' is the first of a series of adventure games starring the eponymous protagonist, then it is certainly a fun, promising start. 'Kathy Rain' is quite a linear adventure game, with one set of puzzle opening up another. While this may frustrate more seasoned adventure gamers, this design guarantees players not finding themselves in a dead end or no-win situation. For the most part, sufficient clues are provided (sometimes quite explicitly) to solve the puzzles. Many are easy, but a couple of puzzles are a bit too obtuse for my liking. Coming off of adventure games like 'Resonance' and 'Technobabylon', I find the variety of puzzles in 'Kathy Rain' to be a bit lacking, too. Still, the story is slow, but well paced. I was never quite sure where the story would take me. Just when I thought I got the mystery figured out, the game threw me a slight twist that added a new layer of intrigue to the story. I liked that, especially when the protagonist is a headstrong, cynical and seemingly uncaring character. These unexpected turn of events allow Kathy to develop as a character by having her confront her vulnerabilities. Still, I wish there is more to 'Kathy Rain' than when was adequately delivered. The game is well made, but it feels like a well packaged introduction to a bigger story, much like 'The Blackwell Legacy' -- it's good, and I want more of it. Unfortunately at the time of this review, Clifftop Games has not announced plans to make a 'Kathy Rain' sequel. It's a shame because there is much potential to the Kathy Rain character and her developing skill set as a detective and journalist. Hopefully, somewhere down the line, we will see more of Kathy Rain in her sleuthing adventures.
