Jill of the Jungle: The Complete Trilogy

I'm sure all the 5-star reviews are the result of rose-tinted glasses for this game, as Jill has not aged well. Yes, I'm well aware of the limitations of the medium back in 1992, but when you put this up against the likes of Sonic 2, Flashback, Ecco, etc it just doesn't hold a candle. And, as far I can tell there isn't really any historic reason to play this either. Sure, there's a certain charm to the graphics and goofy sound effects, but really your time is much better spent elsewhere. At least it's free on GOG.

This is the first PC game I ever played on my family's shiny new 386, way back in 1992. My nostalgia glasses for this game are so thick they are basically welding goggles, but even still, for fans of classic DOS platform games, Jill of the Jungle still holds it's own. The graphics, sound and music were all state of the art for their day, and the gameplay is simple, but fun. Anyone who doesn't care about old games obviously won't change their mind playing this old game, but fans of the old classics absolutely musn't pass this one up. Plus it's free now. Did I mention that it's free?

I grew up with Jill of the Jungle and it's FREE! We mostly had shareware versions of most of the games back then and I'm really happy that I can finally play all 3 episodes now. The game is hard but platforming, picking up points and manipulating throwing daggers is fun!

I enjoyed the series back in the early 90s, some of the best PC games at the time, along with the pinball games from the same company (they even had a Jill of the Jungle pinball game that I must have played hundreds of times). I bought them one at a time from a kiosk at a local store, played them all at least twice. When I saw these on GOG I downloaded right away (love the price!) and fired up the game. It still works great even though I have more than 640K -- anyone else remember configuring DOS startup files to allocate memory different ways for every game? Jill of the Jungle games are still very fun. Not terribly deep on strategy but there are some puzzles and challenges that are fun to work out. I like exploring the different areas. When you die it's quick to get going again. One of those games where "I'll just play a few more minutes" and an hour goes by. Graphics and sounds still work well. So happy to have these games again! My only gripe is that Windows 10 interrupts the game for different reasons, and when I Alt-Tab back it's no longer full screen. I won't hold that against the game. Don't expect the latest triple-A game and you won't be disappointed.
