Jazzpunk

I loved this game from the outset. I especially enjoyed all of the comedy that was sprinkled all over this game. I enjoyed every minute and enjoyed imagining that I was some sort of James Bond, knocking people out the way and breaking down the door to the women's toilets in the most heroic way possible. The only reason this has 4 stars is because it was too SHORT! If it was lengthened I would've given it 5 stars and donated all my money to these people. It was one of the only games I sat down and played all the way through with no NO breaks (well, 1 or 2 trips to the toilet). I highly recommend this and if you're sitting there thinking 'It doesn't look like my kind of game' TRY IT! It was one the best gaming experiences of my life and is quite possibly one of my 'perfect' games. It's definitely in my top 10.

The Most '90s Thing I've Ever Played

This First-Person Adventure isn't something that requires a ton of brain power to solve its puzzles, but it's a pretty wild ride, if you're down for a game that offers little else. The humor is mostly non-stop off-the-wall stuff, like was popular in the '90s, and does include a lot of references to things from the '90s. Everything you do is complete nonsense, so not all of the jokes are going to land, but it at least doesn't stop you in your tracks until you put 87 different item combinations together until you figure out, "OH! I need to make a porkscrew!" and then kills you and dead-ends your progress anyway. It does have a kitschy '50s visual style, but that was also popular in the '90s, Ren & Stimpy being the biggest proponent. This probably isn't going to be your new favorite game, but it's worth a run through, especially if you can grab it on sale.

Having a blast

I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm having such a good time with it I wanted to go ahead and leave my 2 cents before I forget. I had never heard of or seen this game at all, got it on a whim because it looked unique, the trailer piqued my interest, and it was on sale for $3.74. I am so glad I got it, I've been non-stop cracking up since I began. It's bizarre, it's got satire, it's got parodies (of some of my favorite movies no less!), it's got puns for friggin days, and it's absolutely loaded with little easter eggs and tid bits to find which makes exploration very rewarding. The feeling of walking around enjoying all the gags and set pieces reminds me a lot of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. I think the humor might be a bit niche, but if it hits your spot it's gonna hit it real good, especially if you're a tech nerd. I was really surprised at all the minigames you can find, none of it is GOTY material or anything but they're fun and help break-up the monotony of just walking between jokes. There's even little side quests to find in the levels. These extras were not needed for this type of game, I didn't expect them when I realized what kind of game I was playing, and that just makes their inclusion all the better. There's even a little multiplayer TDM game in there!! The one and only complaint I have is that I've been experiencing some bugs using my controller: some buttons seem to swap functions depending on the context, like Square and X swap during some minigames, and then revert while walking around. Sometimes they even switch between each sub-menu while Paused, like X will select Options, but then back out of the Options menu itself. I'm using a PS4 Controller by way of DS4, so this may just be something on my end, not the fault of the game. And it's still totally playable, so no biggie. Overall loving the experience, and I highly recommend it!

A one and done laugh-em-up.

Humor, is subjective. Jazzpunk is entirely humor based. It will live and die by your sense of humor. Sometimes I found it witty, and sometimes I felt like I was missing a reference to a radio drama I never heard. Jazzpunk is not so much a game as it is an interactive tour of a few zany locations, taking place in an alternate 1959 where Japan is the global superpower and technological innovation took a screwball turn. (But this doesn't really matter, it's all flavor.) Upon arriving at a location, you'll typically see and get told your "objective" which tend to be more akin to locations you go to when you just want to move on. The filling is more in the pointing and clicking of things to see what reaction they may elicit, along with a few bite sized side ventures. It does what it does, and it is competently made, but it feels like it's missing a bit of soul, for a je ne sais quoi of a thought. I don't think it is BAD; however something clearly lacks. It's a game I've run out of words to say for, which speaks volumes to it.

Weird and strange, thus memorable

‘Jazzpunk: Director’s Cut’ is…weird. I went in not really knowing what it is or what to expect, and finished it not fully understanding what I’ve just played. That’s not to say this game is a bad game – it’s not. It’s just different and very strange. ‘Jazzpunk’ is a first-person adventure game with offbeat humour, and plenty of pop culture and computer technology references. In it, you play as Polyblank, a spy tasked with completing a series of 4 missions, interspaced with interludes. The missions and the puzzles within aren’t difficult at all. In fact, you’re told how to bypass each obstacle almost every time. The fun of this game is not really the espionage, but the exploration of your surroundings and interaction with anyone/anything that the game allows you to. In doing so, you may find yourself engaging in non-sequitur sidequests like wrestling a Randy “The Macho Man” Savage look-a-like and flicking a spider off a woman’s shoulder. I ended up spending close to 3 hours trying to find most, if not all, of these interactive moments. The game’s presentation is simplistic, with a 1950/60s aesthetic that makes me yearn for a more substantial spy game like ‘No One Lives Forever’. Not only does ‘Jazzpunk’ plays and feels weird, it also looks strange. It’s what I presume a hallucinogenic dream would be like. ‘Jazzpunk’ is a very niche game for a very specific audience, with jokes and allusions that may be over the head of some players. It’s weird and different enough to warrant checking out, just to see what the initial excitement was all about back in 2014. Given how its humour may not be for you, you may want to grab this game when it goes on sale.
