Wildfire - Less fire, more smoke

In all honesty, this looks like a good attempt to update the game, but there are sadly so many issues here. While I applaud the effort to update the locations and make settlements more vibrant, the tweaks in the graphics of the world map, and the improvement of the UI to allow control of more mercs, this is where things go downhill. Firstly, the difficulty of the game is a lot harder; even on an easier setting, you still find yourself getting your mercs being hit and having trouble taking down a goon. Secondly, the story is nowhere different to the original. Where are the mafia and the drugs? You can tell that this is mentioned within the in-game e-mails, but cutscenes are exactly the same as the original, as if they didn't bother to make new ones, only tweaked by the changes in location setups. There are other changes which just make this not a worthwhile title to play. All in all, if you are looking to play a more updated version of Jagged Alliance 2, this is for you. But if you want to experience the Jagged Alliance series, stick to the originals - if Dmitri could say it, he'd be more willing to fight in the original Arulco than this updated look...

What a letdown

This version of Jagged Alliance 2 is a buggy mess, do not reccomed. The core game however is superb, it's just an unplayable edition

Not as great as the original

I loved the first Jagged Alliance 2. When I played it, an enemy was in the water. I wounded him, he fell and the game crashed. I had to figure out a way to eliminate him and not get my boys hurt. This game has swimming and drowning, so that is not a problem here. It is the same Elliot-slapping good story, but the fights are more obviously puzzles than they were in Jagged Alliance 2. Not a game breaker, but a definite ouch.

It is a pretty challenging tactical sim

First of all, we can ignore the drama of 1.13 vs Wildfire 6. While you can get the maps for 1.13 Jagged Alliance 2 gold gog modded install, the Wildfire 6 commercial release here has more additional options such as npcs in farm tiles, mined defense of sam sites and other installations, and generally more interesting AI for night missions and daylight flanking. I think it is worth collecting both at this time of 2023-2024. The new AIM npcs have been tweaked to be more tactically useful. While one might dislike the personalities, many of the "lost mercs" are actually at Merc, like hitman and scope. Since merc is very affordable or gamable, you can refuse to pay for a long time, this is good for new games where economy is tight. San Mona still has the slightly buggy mma fights of 5k per profit, 3 fights every 2-3 nights. Mercs are higher cost, but other mercs like ira now have ambi/auto weapons, one of the op builds an IMP/custom merc normally has to take. Dimitry has higher wisdom too, so he learns faster than maddog. I have 40 in game days. PIcking single day options for the higher end mercs. My suggestionhire shadow and others for their weapons, then take chitzena within a day. Miguel used to say take Drassen, so I understand the new VA. The tactics are the strong point. Night time flanks, the AI no longer runs to noises and lights. They refuse to go into the light. They hide more when outnumbered, but you can still do a distraction and pull their attention away. Very nice night ops gameplay. Arguably better than 1.13 AI. All in all, worth the 1-2 dollars or even 5. I love tactical fights btw. The scope rebalances are nice. Novice is very easy on the strategic side, but still akin to expert on the tactical side as others mentioned. THey are much more accurate, even the blue shirt/red shirt newbies. My militia is blue, the enemy should be red, come on red vs blue people! The blackshirts defend the same sites, challenging, but still killable on night ops.

Very Balanced and Worth It

If you like strategy, this here would be a great chance to hone your skills. I must admit, compared to JA2 Gold, I would recommend this version even if considerably more difficult and stand-alone. You have so many chances to upgrade your mercenary skills which I find to be extremely important and very satisfying. More challenging than JA2 Gold for sure, I do want to respond to the people who don't like this game. First off, you actually want enemies to scale walls? It's already difficult enough, that doesn't need to be the case. Besides, you are going to be outnumbered in virtually any given sector anyway so the enemies are going to shoot at any merc in their line of sight regardless of where they are (on the roof or not). Second, I find "Brain" to be the best choice of any merc on the entire roster - the best bang for your buck for sure. I am slowly upgrading mercenary skills so that he would have an 80+ skill level on every single merc stat. I don't however waste my time needlessly which means I don't ever fight every single sector on the map. And to those who might have a word to say about difficulty, as I say, this game is difficult enough on normal. Since when would having a long-range weapon without a sniper scope guarantee a head shot? That just doesn't make sense. I plan to persist in my quest to have a "perfect" merc that has every single stat at 80+. Essentially, the person will do every single task asked of him or her but really electronics is probably the least important in the game. So, someone like Brain will do just fine!
