Description
After defeating Heskel in her previous adventure, Shelly Harrison decides to celebrate at a local bar. When explosions interrupt her tasty beverage, she rushes out to find Heskel in a monstrous flying machine, cackling madly as he rockets away toward a mushroom cloud on the horizon.
Instinctively, she reaches for her Loverboy revolver, cocks it, and searches for the fastest transportation she can find - a sleek and powerful high-speed Hover Bike, armed with Drunken Homing Plasma Missiles. Shelly's fight against Heskel continues with multiple brand-new zones to explore, new dangerous enemies, new armaments to destroy them with, and some amazing high-speed vehicle combat.
Like classic expansions, Aftershock offers a brand new Arrange mode. Whether playing for the first time or revisiting Ion Fury, choose Arrange mode to experience the original game but now enhanced with new enemies, weapons and more.
New enemy variety, new ammo types and a new weapon, cool new vehicle (and the game has a vehicle now), new maps and map design (a lot more scrambling around ruined structures this time). It's great, all of it.
There's even a new version of the main campaign that adds in all the new expansion content into the base campaign's levels, with occassional tweaks to the level design itself.
The Aftershock expansion brings to the table new weapons and powerups, a hoverbike with an overpowered gun, a new campaign, and a new version of the base game campaign that incorporates those novelties (and whose levels are mirrored for some reason).
The new campaign is both shorter and at least somewhat more eventful than the main one (which wasn’t that high a bar to begin with, and didn’t get raised all that much), but still, it manages to strike a nice balance in that regard. The new weapons do add variety, but they are somewhat extra, and probably contribute to the new campaign being easier.
The levels are more varied and often include multiple instances of clever backtracking options. Props to the level designers, they did a great job.
And once again, the quality of gameplay here smooths over many of the game’s rough edges. The humor helps too (oh, boy, the posters). Still. It should have been the base game with the duration and story of this DLC. Then it would’ve been perfect. As it stands, it’s a solid, above-average addition.
Just buy it, my grandson... BUY IT NOW!!! And play until the end of the world... HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I have the expansion on Steam and play on the latest version of EDuke32. \o/
So Aftershock gives you around 10 new BIG levels and took me around 7 hours to complete. It introduces a new "rocket launcher" weapon that I thought was much needed in the original game. You'll also notice plenty of new powerups that you can actually hold onto and use whenever you want. I appreciate this very much instead of instantly activating them upon touching them like in a Quake or Doom game.
If there's anything I didn't like, I personally felt that the vehicle you obtain during this expansion lingers for a level or two too long. Zooming around in a Jet Ski/vehicle thing was a lot of fun, but I enjoyed venturing through levels more on foot. Definitely not a deal breaker, but a minor annoyance that I ultimately overlooked.
There's really not too much to say. With Aftershock, you're getting more high quality Ion Fury levels. So if you enjoyed the original game, you'll have a lot of fun with Aftershock.
Took me around 5-6 hours to beat this so it's like ~2/3 size of main campaign which is great. Levels once again are well made and very detailed, maybe even more than in the base game. New additions like extra weapon/ammo and enemies are well welcomed as well. Vehicle parts were pretty cool and add something unique to the gameplay for a while. Overall it's great DLC and if you liked the base game, this one is great deal even for full price.
