3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.
Welcome to ION FURY!
Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.
Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.
Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.
Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
True tracked module music!
Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!
What's been achieved here with such an archaic engine is quite astounding. The novelty of a brand new Build game aside, this is a masterful FPS by any era's standards. The combat is extremely polished and exhilarating despite the modest arsenal and enemy roster. Whilst each enemy has a unique and identifiable look, they feel like specialised units of a larger force and (acid-spitting giant centipedes aside) there is a wonderful sense of cohesion.
Great audio mixing and music, the gun sounds are meaty and very present in the mix. The ambient noise for each level puts many modern games to shame. Lots of great references to pretty much everything imaginable from the Duke-ish keycard readers to the grenade clangs modelled after those in Quake.
Ion Fury puts into perspective once again how boring AAA games have become. If 2.5D is this good, who needs 3D?
Ion Fury Voidpoint is an incredible entry to the BUILD engine library. The graphics are faithful for the era the game is mimicking, while expanding in key areas. The lighting is beautiful, the weapons are satisfying, and the pacing is perfect. The music is kept fresh with every level and each song has a charm, except for this one annoying song I had to listen to for too long in zone 6 because I got stuck looking for the next area - which is my one critique: This is probably just me being dumb, but I got lost in some areas because I couldn't find out where to go next. However, most of the areas flow extremely smoothly and don't have this problem, so it's a minor complaint. Overall, if the scoring system was out of 10, I would give this game a solid 9.
Well, the holy trinity of build games (Duke, Blood, Shadow Warrior) has now become a quartet. This game is fast paced, great looking (for a Build game - it takes only about 100Mb on your HDD), great sounding (the weapons have a great meaty sound and good kickback) fun!
For me this game is a part of new "Big Three" along with Dusk and Amid Evil. It was the last one I played, and after I made it through twice, on penultimate and ultimate difficulty, and found all secrets (oh God...), I think I am ready to make this review.
Ion Fury is an heir to the Build games - Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior and Blood. My relations with these games are like this: love and cherish Blood and Duke, still re-playing them from time to time, never bored, always fun. Absolutely loathe SW, found it almost unplayable both back in the days, and much later in 20XX's when I started rediscovering old games, never made a playthrough and doubt I ever will.
Technically IF is a masterpiece of Build-engine engineering. Aesthetically it's a definite callback to Duke 3D, but gameplay-wise, I think, is much closer to Blood and Shadow Warrior.
If you want a lot of vocal and accurate description of the good stuff in this game go watch Civvie11, it's worth it.
My problem is, half way through the game I... got bored. And for a game that wants to be an heir to Blood and Duke that's like a death penalty. Around the levels where game introduces final enemies - pretty standard mutant zombies who come in packs, make your ears bleed with irritating sounds and have the sole purpose of draining your ammo, because at this point you definitely feel NO trouble with ammo management whatsoever. Yes, on maximum difficulty. No fun looking for secrets, no fun blowing up enemies - game burned out. In comparison, Dusk and Amid Evil grabbed you by the throat and kept you on your toes from beginning to the end. So did Blood and Duke 3d. Ion Fury... drags.
Overall, it's a solid, solid game. But of my neo-Big Three it's also the weakest one. An expansion is coming up this year, with a vehicle sections added, some new enemies and weapons... It has a chance to improve a lot, or to repeat all the same and make it even worse. We will see. As I said, this game inherited some big shoes to fill.
