Level up your skills: decide wich skills to level up and use them wisely in classic TTRPG / pen'n'paper skillchecks.

Find hidden clues: use the detective-mechanic to find clues and evidence.

Move around in the shadows unnoticed: sneak past enemies and guards to stay unnoticed. Or knock them out from behind.

Defend yourself: if your sneak-mission has failed, you can use the fight-mechanic as a last resort and defend yourself with an old fashioned fist fight.

Craft items to boost your skills: with the things you find in the world you can craft items that will allow you to succeed in difficult skillchecks

Decide how you want to solve the tasks at hand. With charisma, diplomacy, brute force, the art of stealth or strategic escape? The mission, however, is clear: solve this case!

A Diamond in the Rough

This is the kind of experiment I dig! It's an RPG where you actually have to ROLEPLAY instead of just bash things. You are an inspector so you gain experience from detective things: eavesdropping, sneaking, spotting, doing quests to butter up the locals so you can interrogate them. There is a skill based system you can improve, but a lot of puzzles are closer to a traditional adventure: picking up the trail of logic, talking to the right people. Essentially your skills are short cut, but a welcome one in situations where there are guards patrolling. This is not the world's most 'triple A' game. Graphics are rudimentary (but charming), the game begins in German and needs to be set to English and although it is voice acted (and not badly) the dialogue seldom fits the subtitles, and some things remain untranslated. You also need to make some educated guesses as to how to use items and where. For a brief summary, consider a much more forgiving Pathologic meets Disco Elysium with a dash of Monkey Island, but all in a unique historical setting. I like a game that tries to keep it's feet on a ground and bit and mines a culture for the atmosphere and experience of really getting inside the head and life of someone you might never have supposed to before. That's what true Roleplaying is about. There's probably some hiccups given the way it looks. I'm guessing some edges are rough in addition to the shaky translation, but some far it's a hoot!

Buggy, Constant Crash to Desktop

I really really liked what I was able to play of this game. Unfortunately I started to experience frequent bugs, leading to having to restart the game multiple times. I seemed to have some luck with one particular run that didn't seem too buggy and got a few hours in and was enjoying myself....and then something started leaking in the game's memory and it started abruptly giving constant "Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource" errors and ultimately bricked the save file. It's now almost 1 and a half years out from launch so very disheartening that this amount of bugginess persists.

Surprisingly funny and entertaining game

For starters - I didn't buy this game for the grafics. In this department there's nothing to write home about. It's a bit antiquated, but didn't give me eye cancer, so that's that. The game enginge ran smoothly on my computer, I encountered only minor bugs (like a npc leaning against a wall two meters away). The dialogs are mostly funny but try to convey the issues of the historic time and place here and there, which for me created some nice immersion. I was very pleased by the voice acting (I played in german can't say anything about the "bavarian english"), which was surprisingly good for a low-budget title. The quality of the different quests ranged from OK to quite original (personal favorite - the prussian Soldier in the privy). Most of the game consists of running around, talking to different people while using different strategies of interaction, looking for clues and playing a repetitive dice game. With experience points you gain levels, each level you can increase one attribute which makes the connected dice game easier (so if you really hate dice games, this game is probably not for you). There's some crafting which is linked with some quests. I did some save-scumming here and there to get the results I wanted, the longer I played the less I had to save-scum. All in all the rng semed fair to me. In spite of some minor flaws (for my taste the repetitive dice game could be shortened) I really loved the experience and hope for similar games in the future (minus the dice game). 5 stars from me.

Cheating FTW

I love this game. The fight music with tuba is the best. The characters are memorable. I hex-edited the save file in C:\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\Totgeschweigen\Saved and gave myself 0x1A (31) in all stats at the beginning of the game. That and save-scumming made the game very casual, which I prefer. The dice-player at the Inn is basically a fountain of free cash. It's a little tricky at first, since you have to navigate the menus to set the text language and speech language to English while all menu items are in German. There are lots of places in the game where they slip and say a few German words, but it doesn't affect comprehension. The game doesn't hold your hand as far as destination. Some places you have to look up on the internet to find. You need to use the compass often. Also if you're in the forest at night and your lamp runs out of oil, that means you're stumbling around in the pitch black night! But you can power through by using the compass.

Fun open world adventure

An open world adventure set in rural Bavaria in the late 19th century. UI (inventory, quest tracking, reference, ...) as well as the controls in the game work well, even though the inventory gets a bit cluttered over time. Graphics-wise the developers seem to have gone for that faded look you see in colorized black-and-white photographs, which IMHO works quite well for this game, and made me forgive other graphics flaws. Leveling up the main character happens in small but frequent increments, so I felt like I was being rewarded constantly. Quests were spread out nicely (not dumped on you in bulk, which is something I disliked in for instance "Witcher 3" and "Cyberpunk 2077"). I felt like I had something useful to do throughout my entire playthrough without being overwhelmed. The story and how it was embedded in the historical context also was quite engaging. Combat, stealth, and crafting mechanics are only basic, but work well enough for what they are and what you need them for in the game. There are a couple things I didn't like, though. For one thing, I hate how dialogue sequences can't be aborted. It's quite annoying if you made a mistake early in the dialogue and want to reload, but are forced to complete the entire conversation before you can do so. The final showdown felt like it was supposed to be more action-oriented than the dialog/dice-based approach allowed for. And the bandits were little more than window-dressing rather than actual characters in the game. Still, all in all a good game despite being a little rough around the edges. Recommended particularly if you are able to play it in German.
