Decent, but Outdated.

Icewind Dale, unlike Baldur's Gate or Planescape, is a gameplay-focused D&D game with minimal emphasis on story and characters and more on combat and dungeon exploration. The game uses the counted magic system rather than MP. Debuffs/curses and death are permanent until you remove/revive them with holy magic, and weapons & armor use the Plus/AC system with special equipment having names and backstory. The game will overwhelm you with its dungeons having multiple paths that lead to different objetives you have to complete to unlock the next dungeon, most of them being relic collecting. The story is about your custom party being part of a ill-fated expedition to help the community of Kuldahar that is being threaten by an ancient evil of D&D lore.

Not quite as good as Baldur's Gate

Icewind Dale was a good game. It was fun. But wow, it was such a forgettable story. As soon as I beat the game I had already forgotten what it was about. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 were some of the best RPG's ever made. Icewind Dale uses the exact same game engine, so I thought it would be just as good. But it wasn't. That doesn't mean it was a bad game. Like I said, it was good. If you liked Baldur's Gate, I'm sure you will like this game as well.

More Infinity Engine greatness!

The Icewind Dale games are not nearly as sophisticated in the story scope as the Baldur's Gate line, but they are equally entertaining. It's a relief sometimes to dial the epic nature of a story back a bit. I thought I'd get tired of snow and ice, but I never did. The game is well-paced and always enjoyable. As much as I enjoyed meeting and building a party in both BG 1 & 2, it was fun to create the full party at the beginning of the game. My friend and I completed this one using the multiplayer feature, which worked very well (much better than Baldur's Gate II - no idea why but that one took a lot of troubleshooting to get it working). Though it's hard to say what the highlight of the game was, both my friend and I loved the "Trials of the Luremaster" add-on, which we didn't even know existed until we were about to start the "Heart of Winter" expansion. "Trials of the Luremaster" is much harder than the main game, so hard that we dialed back the difficulty a notch. But, the unfolding of the simple story and the great design of the dungeons, especially the maze, kept us enthralled and entertained.

It´s just perfect

Really. I don`t understand this negative attitude against the Enhanced Edition. I think, it is perfekt. Respectfully against the franchise with some slight modifications making playing more comfortable for modern times, like looting for example. Or 80 arrows instead of 40. I played it for the first time when it came out, and I`m playing it again right now. Not sure I would dare without the EE.

Fantastic

Icewind Dale is one of the best D&D CRPGs ever made. It is also a great Forgotten Realms game, though you don't have to be a Realms fan to enjoy it. The game is highly tactical and challenging compared to similar Infinity Engine games like Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment. It is more reminiscient of a classic dungeon crawl than a sweeping saga like BG or thoughtful RPG like Torment. The visuals and music are the best in the series. Very worth the price.
