one of the best indies this year

Much has been said already about Hyper Light Drifter's superbly crafted retro world and its tight and demanding gameplay. While I couldn't help but feel almost mistreated by the game's initial difficulty, I slowly grew to its challenges and its charms. None of its mechanics are easily mastered, nor are they ever explained straight forward, but the more it feels like a real accomplishment once the player comes to grip with them. Its strange and visually enchanting world offers many secrets to discover and mysteries that never fully resolve. But far from being a letdown, this invites the player to be richly involved and to fill in the gaps yourself. Having finished the game I can already feel myself wanting to come back for more. Hyper Light Drifter is already easily one of the best indie titles of the this year!

First Review on GOG

Spectacular. Riveting. Phenomenal even. I am a few hours into the game, just killed the first boss and on my way to the next one. A few things, the mac version has some bugs but they have not reduced my enjoyment of the game very much at all. The screen covers itself in the bottom layer of graphics when an enemy kills itself by accident, and I have had one crash in around 3-4 hours of playing. I am thoroughly enjoying exploration and combat. Every area seems to be littered with secrets, and when coupling the level of detail alongside the hidden stuff you really get a sense of devotion from the game's creators. I highly recommend using a controller, the mouse and keyboard controls (whilst playable) were not a priority in development it seems. The best part about this game is the feels. For example: As your climbing a mountain in the north, the music spikes as you see an intensely ominous figure in the far distance. That far off peak is your destination, and a sense of gloomy wonder seeps into your mind as you brace yourself for what will surely be a tough climb.

Needs Optimization and Reworking

I really wanted to like this game. It's got great pixel art, it's got a fantastic soundtrack, and it's got all this visual storytelling and intrigue. But the way the game is optimized just kills any mood the story could have. For one, the longer you play it, the laggier it gets. Input lag gets worse, enemy attacks get slower, even basic menu actions (limited though they are) take seconds to execute. Bear in mind, I don't have a potato for a computer, but even if I do by today's standards, when this game was made, it could roar along with the newest titles. Combined with the difficulty the game wants and I find myself, more often than not, fighting against the input issues. Keyboard, controller, doesn't matter. This was especially terrible with the last boss, where each attack knocks 2HP off you and you can be knocked into other attacks. I basically had to cheese the thing with the laser rifle for eons to avoid instant-death. Not to mention, a lot of the secrets don't change the course of the story. I was hoping finding all the monoliths would do...something. Bigger health bar, altering the dog...nothing. You get brown. It feels like Shadow of the Colossus, but doesn't seem to arc into a bigger story or have the technical optimization needed to do this. The color scheme is pretty, the soundtrack is great. But as a game, it just is too frusturating, and rewards too little. I give it two stars because I still wanted it to work...but it just doesn't.

Well worth your time

The only thing I can add to the other reviews is my personal opinion that the 'extra' (i.e. non-story critical) content is really not worth the effort. I advise you just play the game through and enjoy it as a linear experience. On another note, the Linux version performed well with one exception: The music in the game would cut out after about 20-30 minutes, forcing a restart of the game. It's possible that this bug has been fixed as I played HLD when it first launched on GOG.
