Impressive

This was not the leap forward that the second game was. I forget if I ever seen evidence for the following theory but definitely it feels extremely likely that simply they made this to keep people interested in the property until they could finish Blood Money which is indeed another massive improvement on what came before. This doesn't have very many new features. However it does have some very impressive elements. The levels are sometimes absolutely huge even once you know exactly what to do it'll take a while just to carry it all out. Where before this one sometimes you genuinely did just have to figure out what your meant to do and then do it it wasn't necessarily easy but it was less compelling than this. There's also sometimes complications. On a non-zero number of occasions you not only have to deal with the regular stuff but there's also a SWAT team or equivalent that you have to choose between engaging with or possibly being faster than. It is simply not an option to just ignore them. This is the kind of thing that you would normally only experience in one of these if you had failed stealth. Literally every single level of this allows for a Silent Assassin rating. Some of them are massively difficult to obtain of course that simply makes it that much more satisfying. I haven't played past absolution yet but so far this is the only one of these that this is accurate for. All the others have at least one level where it simply is not possible; you are forced into armed conflict. The overall storyline continues to just be fine. The non-linear narrative with flashbacks association and a flashy gritty look is very of its time and doesn't quite work as well today as it did when it was released, which I think is completely forgivable. This is also one of the most fun to return to if you just feel like running around and playing in the world of Hitman. I'm somewhat mixed on the reinterpretation of levels that we've seen before.

The Best Before Blood Money

The atmosphere is simply stunning, as with all Hitman games, but even more so here. The only thing I knew about Contracts was that it contained remaked missions of Codename 47, and I have to say that's my least favorite part: they're certainly well-made and fun but, let's just say that, for the purposes of the story, some of them make more sense to exist (RE-exist in this game) than others. The reason I consider this the best game out of the first three is mainly the yet mentioned atmosphere, but also the improved enemy AI and 47's movement speed, who, for all its good things, was a snail in Silent Assassin. IMPORTANT (for me): I've reinstalled the game several times, but the music from the end credits is still missing. Maybe an update will fix that. Anyway, a definite Good Old Game in my opinion.

Hitman Contracts... Insert S at start

Game doesn't work. Running on windows 11 - controls are unresponsive and game runs in slow motion with bugs galore. UTTERLY UNPLAYABLE!

Dark and depressing rough gem

Hitman Contracts takes a darker look into the world of assassination as Agent 47 recalls his past contracts, some being remakes of levels from the first Hitman game. The game manages to nail a dark atmosphere with grim storytelling and Jesper Kyd's amazing soundtrack which makes an overall decent game into an experience unlike any other. If you're willing to put up with early 2000's jank, I highly recommend this game.

One step forward, half-a-step back..

Played Codename 47. Silent Assassin wouldn't run. So here I am. This series has potential, but so far I have found it only realises the extent of its concept in brief flashes. Compared to Codename 47, some mistakes have been corrected, but some have not, & some new ones have arisen. Overall it is a general step in a better direction though. The new save feature is long overdue & is integrated quite well: you have a limited number of saves you can make for each mission (how many you can use is altered by the game difficulty). This prevents the player from carelessly bypassing the challenge of the game with unlimited savefiles, but finally allows some progress retention in missions. A new A.I system is in place that dictates how suspicious an NPC is of the player (it is communicated via a simple & understandable part of the HUD). This gives some leeway + nuance to your interactions with enemies. They are far less likely to just start shooting you in the face now as their first course of action. Gunplay is better also. Unlike Codename 47, you are far less likely to die in 2 hits if you have good protection and aren't hit in the head. Aiming also feels more natural + headshots on enemies are much more respected here. However, this game was apparently rushed to market & there are some telltale signs of this. Namely, the fact that roughly half the missions here are remakes of levels from Codename 47. Personally, I was curious though as some of them had serious issues in Codename 47. All but 2 of them are generally improved upon. One of them is actually inferior (Hong assassination), the setting is lacking in 'life' + reuses a map from a prior mission. There is also no real overarching narrative, and the music selection is limited. Overall, this game works as a nice introduction to the series. It may actually be a tad too forgiving for some (e.g. the map showing all NPC movements), but if the concept interests you, you are likely to find some fun here, regardless.
