Description
Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is an epic fantasy adventure and role-playing game by Lori Ann Cole and Corey Cole, creators of Quest for Glory, Shannara, Castle of Dr. Brain, and Mixed-Up Fairy Tales. Although Hero-U is not a direct sequel to the Quest for Glory games, it features the same mix of adventure, role-playing, humor, and immersive storytelling that we introduced in that series.

In Rogue to Redemption, Shawn O'Conner strives to become Rogue of the Year while exploring a mysterious castle, making friends and enemies, fighting deadly foes, and uncovering the secrets of his own hidden past. Meanwhile players will enjoy the rich and humorous dialogue and descriptions as they guide Shawn through his adventures.

During the day, Shawn attends classes at the University, practices his skills, and tries to make friends with other students. At night, it's time to pull out weapons, armor, and traps to explore the abandoned wine cellars, stunning sea caves, creepy catacombs, and deadly dungeon beneath Hero-U. Most combat is optional for those who prefer a pure adventure game, but there are ample rewards for those who choose to valorously fight the creatures that threaten the school and all of Sardonia.

RP good charcter not

this game is one I wanted to like and sort of... do, and sort of find some things mildy annoying. as for the pure RPG aspects of your characters abilities it is excellent! very reminescent of the Quest for Glory Series, particularly #3. you USE your various abilities in different ways(or sometimes learn new ones) rather than going and killing trolls and "leveling up" or in an even more inferior way some other games do, "mile stones" instead you practice and do tasks as in real life. as for mile stones they are purely for scocial interactions and improving relationships because reputation is as important as raw abilites! and those people are not going to be there for you if you aren't for them. now I will say what is annoying about that. some characters are actually likeable but why is it that in every game made in the last few years females always role as strong and downtrodden and physical and males as snowflakes in high positions the two girls are both fighter types and have hot tempors the boys(except for the rich one are quite bookish types and the rich one is pompous. actually he is interesting as the protag's only competitor in this. the rest just there to dump on. that said, if you wan tot get by you still have to get in good. Now the silly thing is if you are a smart ass you are "bad" so the problem with this is their is a "right or wrong" answer so the role in conversttion is virtually useless, since it gets mark downs and also lowers rep. so WHY PUT THE SNARKY ANSWER THERE AT ALL IF IT DOES NOT LEAD TO SOME GOOD AT LEAST! this game was written by two over aged hippies but was writen for a much younger audience than most QFG fans. the dialouge is good at times though and others annoying. the time factor is horrible and I hope Lori and Cori cole patch that!

New, Uninteresting Direction

To put it lightly, Quest for Glory basically shaped my opinion of gaming forever. I must have replayed Shadows of Darkness more times than I can count. So I was pretty excited to play a game based off the original games but I was turned off by several design decisions. I didnt immediately like the isometric style, but was able to overlook it. I really think the game could've benefited from the same 2-D approach as the originals in terms of budget and nostalgia. The over-emphasis on "actions" that could be performed on every object was a slight annoyance but the time management was neat as it gave you a sense of urgency. Over time, the game began to become repetitive and I found myself walking around the same halls more than I did pretty much anything else and spent several hours in the same rooms committing to the same routine every day. But ultimately, the biggest gripe for me was when I realized that all the other students could go out to the town except for you. When they said this game was called Hero University, they LITERALLY meant that you are confined to the university. This was extremely disappointing as the game hinted at an alternate path and a means to escape the university grounds early on, but this was not so. And for a game that was priced at 30 dollars with several years of development under its belt I really wasn't prepared for this slap in the face. So after day 10 I quit playing the game mainly because I was just getting bored of repeating the same actions and not being able to go out into the town and actually apply any of my skills. It wouldve been more interesting to be able to go out and make a difference in town, take some side-jobs independent of the university and be able to Explore in the same vein as its predecessors and maybe even be given the option to undermine the University. I may try Hero-U again, but I dont think I will.

Fun, but doesn't recapture past glories

I grew up playing Sierra's adventure games, and they have a special place in my affections. I love the Quest for Glory series, in particular; so naturally I was curious to check out Hero U, which has the same designers. Let's start with positives. Hero U is fun and addictive. It has likable characters, cool retro art, and a charming sense of humor that sets it apart from more macho games. I enjoyed building up my hero's stats, and watching him grow from wimp to powerhouse -- a feature Hero U shares with Quest for Glory. The gameplay environment is large and invites you to explore, make hard choices, and experiment with several different approaches to problems. It's an immersive game, and will reward re-plays. Now for the bad news. Hero U suffers hugely from the lack of a strong villain. Remember Baba Yaga, Ad Avis and Katrina from Quest for Glory? Yeah, they're not in this. Instead, you get to fight a bunch of giant rats and floating skulls. The lack of a central villain is a particular problem during the climax, which falls flat. I also disliked Hero U's school setting. Quest for Glory was all about exploring rich fantasy worlds with their own mythology and history -- a small Eastern European town besieged by vampires, an Arabian Nights setting, etc. But Hero U just takes place in a school, a boring old school. Get ready to attend classes and take a bunch of tests. Get ready to run down endless corridors and never see the outdoors, ever, in the whole game. At its worst, Hero U gets bogged down in dreary routine and dull locales, and the linear plot forces you to play at a snail's pace. This is a shame, because Hero U is clearly a labor of love and it's really not a bad game. In fact, it's better than I expected -- to be honest, I thought it looked bad from the Kickstarter campaign! I never liked the concept, so it was always going to be a hard sell for me. But, as a longtime QFG fan, I feel that it's worth playing. Just don't expect to relive the good old days.

Sweet nostalgia

I'm not much for writing reviews but I had to chime in quickly on this game. I am a HUGE fan of the original Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory series. Also loved the Space Quest and Police Quest games. If you liked any of those, or the King's Quest series, then you'll find yourself right at home. There have been some updated influences from more recent media, but that's not really a bad thing. The feel is the same classic feel of the old games, the humor, the story, all excellent. Love this stuff and I really hope that they're able to continue on to each of the other class's focused sequals.

Classical game-play, modern writing.

I really enjoy how this game doesn't spoon feed me anything and allows me to discord things on my own. its requires time management, free thinking and some creative ideas. its rewarding and interesting with great writing and what is so far an intriguing story that seems to build at a nice pace. graphics are nice (running animation could do with a little work) with lots of hand drawn textures that give a good sense of place, areas are clear and easy to navigate and menus are slick. I would have gone ahead and 5 stared this game in an instant but i want to draw attention to the font choice in the Journal menu, honestly its really hard to read for me and there is no way to change it. as a dyslexic its just impossible for me to process. this is a minor criticism and overall I'm really enjoying this game, im looking forward to spending my weekend playing my way through the story. I played the game on Antergos Linux and it has worked flawlessly.
