An actual review of an OK game

While I get the complaint about poor product descriptions, here's some actual thoughts on Hero's Hour and its DLC. You will see this and think "Oh, it's HoMM! Or well, an 'HoMMage' to it at least". And on a very superficial level, you'd be right - Hero's Hour borrows a lot from HoMM for its strategic layer design and mechanics, and in terms of looks, systems, etc. That's fine in and of itself, but it creates a certain expectation: that it'll try to live up to such a genre-defining saga. That it'll learn from the best and at least deliver something of comparable depth and polish. And that's where, for all but the most casual and nostalgia-blind gamers, this game fails. HH is not a terrible game. There's some fun to be had with it's kinda wonky, silly and chaotic auto-battling system - though little is found in terms of tactics. The overworld gameloop of expand - defeat - grow clicks well enough (on a surface level...). The AI is stupid, but not utterly incompetent, good enough for the first couple maps. But once that 'brand new game' feel wears off, once you start diving deeper and wanting more, it just falls flat. There's absolutely no "Campaign" past the rudimentary tutorial. This means all "content" will be experimenting with different map types and trying the three or four overarching builds between all Towns. Because despite each of them having different mechanics and some unique skills, the lack of depth in the combat layer really boils things down to just a handful of different playstyles. Balance has been off since launch (when I started playing this), and through its ups and downs it's never quite settled right - this release represents a big balance patch (2.5.0) so I'm hoping it's better than when the DLC launched, but expect things to suck or be massively OP, which will make your early experience likely worse. Beyond that, it'll just start to feel very repetitive, and few things will help spice it up. Get it on sale if you really fancy it. It's ok.

Ok reader answer me this, what exactly is in this DLC? Can't answer right? That's right, I had to go over to steam to see what is actually in this DLC. Let me copy/paste the list so you don't have to: Features The new Rogue faction 67 new units 24 new heroes 12 different towns 28 new skills for heroes new and old A new set of units for each of the 12 factions 25 new town buildings for various factions New war-machines, new map types, and more The Rogue faction is like no other - it represents the neutral creatures, combining new and old to form 12 bands, each of which has their own heroes, unit lineups, and special skills. The 12 bands, of which 6 of them are playable as your starting faction, range from the dragon and slave-focused Tyranny, over the strange body fusions of the Experiment, to the highly specialised metalchemy mechs of Industry. Additionally, Rogue Realms revisits each of the twelve current factions, adding in new units and new mechanics to them. These changes include buildings such as the Summoning Circle, available to Pyre, Tide and Delirium players, which allows you to create units depending on what spells you know. There is also a new unique building for each of Arcane, Pyre, Horde, Tide, Earthen, Pillar and Delirium, which gives impactful passive bonuses, such as gaining elementals when picking up ore on the overworld map, or gives experience whenever you lose units. Finally, Rogue Realms adds in a lot of new hero skills. Some of these skills fit neatly within old playstyles, while others require you to think up new strategies - such as the Avatar skill, which gives you permanent elemental units whenever you cast a spell - but only if you already have other skills that make you good at casting that element of spells - such as the old Pyromancy skill, or the new Fire Heart skill. It seems to be missing important updates

https://steamdb.info/app/1656780/history/ As you see here, the Steam version is 2.7.0 while the "live" GOG version seems to be significantly behind. I have no idea if this issue is unique to the Deluxe Edition or related somehow to the missing Supporter Pack, but it's outdated all the same.

A twist on the original:worth the price?

First of all, I have to admit that even if I love the HOMM saga since I was a child, I no longer have the time to play endless campaings aginst the AI or my friends. Hero's Hour is a good game for me, because games are much shorter and is easier to learn and dominate. Unfortunately, the game is not as polished as other HOMM games, and some factions/heros are really unbalanced. That said, let's move to the actual review of the game. Hero's Hour Deluxe is not a DLC, but a complete overhaul of the original game. New factions, heroes, units, buildings and spells are introduced. Also some new maps. Skill trees for each hero have been modified, and new skills have been added while other have beeen totallly replaced. This changes all the strategies that worked on the previous installment, and now some heroes that were good have become less efficient, while others that were bad now are more or less ok. Game is not balanced though, as there are heroes and units that are reaaaally broken (Oak Hearth + Bloomers is bonkers in the early game and small maps) Rogue faction is less of a faction and more of a potpourri of different neutral units that are loosely connected. Don't expect something similar to the Delirium faction, because it is very different. Units and strategy change depending on your initial hero choice. They lack a bit of charisma and originallity imho, but make games more diverse and interesting. If you like your ice-cream tutti-frutti, you will certainly enjoy Rogue faction. CONCLUSION: Is the game worth the price? If you already own Hero's Hour on GOG, this game is 6,19€. Price is cheap, but I find it a bit too pricey for what it is. Should have they given us a couple of totally new factions instead of Rogue, I would have been much happier. It has far more glitches and graphical issues and bugs that the original game. Saved games on the original do not work on Deluxe. Nevertheless, is a fun game and if you liked Hero's Hour, you may like this one as well.

The good version

I don't know what they did, but I had only given 3 stars for the 1st version of the game and I had uninstalled it. Now I'm surprised it is rich and pleasant and keep it on my drive. This is like a sandbox Might&Magic game wher you choose your kingdom and first heroe in plenty of maps.
