Description

Unique

At its heart, it's a hack and slash / action RPG that does everything you would never expect from the genre. It has no respawning enemies, no copy-pasted backdrops, the NPC are actually really interesting to talk to and multiple times the solutions to some of your quest "jobs" contain a non-violent solution that sometimes solve several quest givers' problem. It has incredibly natural dialogue writing, intriguing story, fleshed-out world, beautiful "no copy-paste" backgroud art and unbelievably good soundtrack, as well as two unique design ideas that really improved the stale action RPG formula I've never seen being adopted by any other game. First, the game incentivises you to wear and wield absolutely every single piece of loot you found (except for duplicates), because by wearing them in battle you can unlock character perks, which provide heavy buffs or unique abilities and can dramatically change your play style. Second, it got rid of health potion inventory hassle by giving you one infinite medkit, but every time using it will cause max health bar to get slightly decreased and the only way to restore it would have to be a good sleep in hotel or in your house. The experience holds up and stays solid upon the pillars of its good writing, soundtrack and art direction, but the two gameplay mechanics mentioned above and not to be seen anywhere else, elevate this game above the crowd, making it a quite unique experience.

A rough gem in the kingdom of heretics

To start, the game title is one of my favorites of recent memory. Heretics? Check. Inquisition? Check. Heretic Kingdoms? Double check. It's the little things, you know? The game itself however, is all over the place. I can only begin at the beginning, with intriguing lore that leads to a beginning that's ridiculously tough. It's literally a cliff, where sometimes the rocks you grab just crumble off or the entire thing you're hanging on from just falls. It is brutal, ruthless and you gotta use some cheese tactics with the Dream World (It in itslf is pretty neat) to get out of the beginning, let alone the hours that follow. Plenty of saves and loading needed. It takes a while before your character becomes competent but it's flexible in how you become competent, thanks to the neat skill system. Each equippable item has it's own "attunement", or skill(s) attached to it, where using it enough times allows you to master it and learn something new. It's really neat and offers some creativity in character building. Once that comes around in full swing, the difficulty begins to even out and that cliff becomes a hill, then a downward slope, then you're just sliding down with no breaks as you break the difficulty that broke you before. You become a God, and stroll to the late game tearing everything a new one. It's also kinda... sloppy, or messy. The game would pause whenever a cutscene plays or whenever you equip a different weapon upon starting it up in each session, but that could be just me. It's also derivative, being a total Diablo-esque game. But it hits that niche well eventually. And I enjoyed the writing, even gets past chuckleworthy at times. Probably a 3.5/5. Nice hidden gem that I wouldn't have given a look if not for the title. Not even close to perfect, but I'm glad I tried it out.

A unique story driven hack n' slash

I didn't play this game when it came out, I played it recently as a gift came with buying Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms. This game was a pleasant surprise for me especially after the disappointment over Shadows. Inquisition or Kult is an interesting mix between Diablo and classic rpgs like Baldur's Gate. It is more Diablo, but unlike those games, it is heavily story driven. You can't even choose your own race/class, because you are a female member of the inquisition according to the game. Kult has also a lot of well written dialogues with a good amount of humour. Which game is the closest thing to this Kult? Maybe Nox of Westwood, but again this is a unique game. The mechanics of Kult are also unique in the genre. Namely the ability to change between the real world and dream world and the attunement system, which means that using equipment (weapon, armor, accessories) will develop passive skills (attunement) for you. It is a fun mechanic because it constantly pushes you to try different equipment to develop more skills at your disposal. The game is not perfect though: it lacks polish here and there. The difficulty is very high you will often want to rage quit and the game forces you to use cheap tactics like changing between dimensions to trick your enemies, which is fun, but abused way to much. The game is pretty much forgotten so you won't find useful walkthrougs on the web, you need to figure out everything on your own. It is not too long (took me 20 hours) and it doesn't have replay value. All in all it is a very fun but very difficult game with unique gameplay mechanics, and has a good story and setting. On this price it is very much worth to try.

Underrated western RPG

Just like other east European games, this Slovakian one has its own charm and technical problems. Let's get to the negative points first: Lots of bugs from which most aren't gamebreaking though: Unusual skill system that would desperately need some explanation. The moment I really understood how it's working, the game went from hard to extremely easy for me. There are a lot of items to master but not many areas with respawning enemies, so you'll miss out on some stuff in a playthrough in any case, especcially if you do not understand how to level up certain skills from the start. The effect of the "dexterity" attribute wasn't obvious for me but it's crucial for proper fighting. Too short for your decisions to really have an impact on the actual game. In order to see enough of the area to play properly, you have to zoom out every time you change areas but since you can do this with the mouse wheel, it isn't so bad. The last bass fights are a bit boring. Now to the good stuff: The story of an atheist inquisition is a nice idea and since a god actually did exist in this world at one point but is dead gives the story some unique directions. It's not a hack'n'slash ARPG like I thought at first but rather something like a far less sophisticated Inquisitor with interesting mechanics. The main character has a personality but isn't good or evil but rather something bitchy in between with a dark childhood and you decide in which direction she is heading. It isn't as annoyingly colourful as today's RPGs and the mix of 2D backgrounds and 3D characters/monsters is working better than I expected. It does blend together quite well. I like the ending although it could have been longer and would need a proper outro. Conclusion: If you like somewhat dusty looking but special western RPGs that are different from all the others, you should definitely give this one a go but I'd recommend to ask people that already finished it about the skill system to save you some late surprises.

Fun, short, simple, isometric aRPG...

I finished it in about 10 hours. It's a very short and fun experience. Gameplay is very simple, quests aren't anything special but it keeps you entertained for the whole duration. The lore is very interesting but the plot is rather weak. You got a hefty selection of weapons and trinkets to play with and a really nice looking 2D artwork. If you want a short and fun aRPG to kill your time - it's worth a purchase.
