Choice that matters, but weak story
When it comes to videogames, player choice is usually touted as a bullet point in many games, and most of the time is nothing but an illusion. Yes, you can choose to do a few different actions, but they either don't impact the story at all or they merely offer a different color of the same thing. Telltale games are famous for this, where even if you think you've made a difference the story will later invalidate it. The reason for this is that it's very hard to accommodate every possible choice and still be able to tell a coherent and well-paced story. This is why Telltale games are praised for their storytelling and not the gameplay. They're (usually) not willing to sacrifice their writing for gameplay. Then there's Quantic Dream, by infamous David Cage. Their games usually take the opposite approach: let gamers make their choice on how the story will develop and no cheating this time: you make a choice and it stays with you. You let a character die and the story will continue without them. While this seems like a dream the flip side is that the writing suffers A LOT. Heavy Rain is a mystery game, and it's very hard to write such a thing and keep it making sense while offering a lot of choice, but the game almost gets away with it. Sure, it has to cheat a lot, but some of it isn't really apparent until a second playthrough. And despite its issues with writing seeing the story develop differently depending on your choices feels quite rewarding. It absolutely relies on you not examining things too closely, though, so you'll enjoy it much more if you just go along for the ride, because the moment you start analyzing things it will all fall apart real quick. If you must play a Quantic Dream game, it must be this one. As a matter of fact, it should probably be the only one, since it's all downhill from here.

Heavy Rain
Cool story. The controls are so bad and annoying that it really takes away from the experiance. If it had normal controls i'd give it a 5 star.
