Change WWII history, your way

HOI is probably recognised as the hardest game series of the grand strategy games from Paradox. To add to that HOI3 is the biggest and deepest entry into the series. Having at least 3 times more provinces than HOI2 and other significant gameplay additions like supply. To learn how to play HOI is very much worth it however, pretty much the same as the other Paradox grand strategy games especially if you're a WWII nut. You'll manage a nation starting in 1936 right up to 1948 which is the end date that the game calculates your achievements, you can simply play past that date. You get to choose any country, major power or minor and play as them. From there, you manage your nation, build up factories and infrastructure, research technologies, align to whichever faction that you want (Allies, Axis or Comintern), play through historical events that happened in WWII like the Spanish Revolution and Pearl Harbour and make decisions along the way. Build up your armed forces and fight it out with your allies against your enemies, on land, air and sea. You are free to do whatever you want and change WWII outcomes as you see fit. The USA joining the Communists? Italy joining Allies? Sure. In my many games, I had one where Brazil invaded Nazi Germany, China defeating the Japs in China, Germany subduing the Soviet Union etc. AI is pretty capable of influencing nations it wants and attacking, defending as it sees fit. Armies are built and designed into divisions. You can mix and match different units into a single division which gives different stats and bonuses like combining tanks and infantry giving you a combined arms bonus. You do the same for navy and airforce. Deploy your forces into an OOB consisting of brigades all the way to overall high command HQs. Either micromanage your forces or let the AI handle the units. Every unit stat is taken into consideration like speed and attack strength. Research will unlock new army units or boost existing units or technologies.

Way too much micro-managing.

I really want to like this game. I`m a fan of WW2 and I like strategy games. I bought this when it first came out and tried to play it. The problem is this game expects you to manage stuff to an unrealistically complicated level. Yes, unrealistic, because if you were a leader of a country in real life, say Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin or even Hitler, there is no way you could manage this level of complexity on your own without becoming insane! Ok, maybe I exaggerate a bit, but seriously, you are expected to do complex diplomacy (which I like), then complicated war manouevering of your troops to the nth degree while also inventing your tanks or vehicles to a ridiculous level of customisation. It sounds great on paper, but nothing is presented in a graphical 3D way so you can really get infused in it for all your hard efforts- It`s a huge spreadsheet of maths, and I`m crap at maths. It`s too much! Most of this would be delegated while you got on with the most important decisions like where to put your money, whom to agree diplomacy with and where you want your troops to go. Now I`ve played the Total War games from the 1st Shogun to Atilla, the Galactic Civ strategy games from 2-3, Civilization from 1 through to 5, etc, but Hearts of Iron III is just too much! I bought it anyway off GOG again, because I still want to try this game and at this price it`s a bargain, but I have a bad feeling it will just sit on the shelf and I will every now and then just wistfully think about playing it before doing something else instead.

Gratuitous Complexity

The game use the 4X approach for WW2. That is there are various screens for technology, production, diplomacy, politics, plus the main map where the main actions take place. HoI 2 was already a complex, but HoI 3 increase in granularity. Each subsystem is more detailed and more complex. Unfortunately this doesn' t lead to a better simulation and the AI as trouble handling all this complexity. Although full of details and WW2 chrome, in action ,the game quickly dive in fantasy land. The game is so poor at recreating the historical course of event, it doesn"t make alternate paths believable at all. Un-modded the game is disappointing historically, mods improve a lot here, unfortunately I had many crashes with mods, and had to reverted to official expansions. As a result the increase in details and complexity feel completely gratuitous. I had the feeling that the devs took each subsystem separately and tried to increase the level of details without thinking at the whole game experience. For example, tanks techs are now broken down into armor, gun, engine, and reliability, but you have to research this four techs, for each type of tanks, light, medium or heavy. This make no sense to have to research armor separately for each type of tanks. Combat is very off-hand, and make large scale military operation a boring exercise in micromanagement. For example playing Germany, the invasion of Poland is ok, invasion of France is plodding, and invading the USSR is a real pain. The game use a detailed chain of command with HQs of various levels, rebinding your complete chains of command for a major operation can take 1-2 hours. The game is playable if you choose a remote country, but playing a major nation is a real pain. Which is a terrible. The UI is not good. You have the option to automate a number of subsystem. But the AI does a poor job, moreover it follows its own "ideas". Overall it was a very disappointing experience, I rather play HoI 2, despite its older UI

Liked Hearts of Iron II ? Wanna buy?

... well, you might end up disappointed. As with the Europa Universalis series, in its third imstallment Paradox took a step away from historical authenticity towards randomness. There are considerable less events than in EU 2 and the overall game feels much more like Risk-on-steroids. I remember buying the game when it came fresh out and uninstalling it after two days of unsuccessful flirting. I was disappointed. Lots of things have happened since then - the extra downloadable contents (DLC) added lots of the long awaited features and lots of bugs have been fixed. I don't recommend this game in its "vanilla" state, unless you love the Risk-like gameplay. For some historical flavour (or flavour at all!) get the DLC and try out some of the awesome mods available. (just to give you an idea - there is a really good World War 1 scenario out there ... along many others). These mods are what makes Hearts of Iron III really shine and entertain you for month to come!

WWII Masterpiece

I picked up HOI3 a few years ago on Steam and frankly I couldn't keep my hands of it. It's the only game on record that has forced me to take unplanned leave from work because I was gaming through the night. The game is very addictive and very fun to play once you learn how. At first, I didn't have a clue what I was doing. I was just researching and building up massive armies using the template divisions provided by the game. Then I had a talk with a friend who was a veteran HOI3er. He explained the importance of army divisions (what brigades belong to each division and how to combine them to get the best combined arms bonus). Creating specialized divisions for the type of enemy and terrain you were encountering became crucial. The army structure: Divisions into Army Corps into Armies into Army Groups into Theatres becomes essential and is best planned ahead. Every time I start a new play, I spend hours only doing the organization of the army. Assigning the right leaders to the right divisions (yes, leaders have traits, and since "Their finest hour" DLC, they are also gaining new traits as their division is fighting) is both fun and tedious. Yes, the learning curve for this game is pretty steep. It was my first experience with the HOI series and I had to watch hours of tutorials on-line to get some real grip on the basics. Micromanagement is at it's finest here, but the game still allows some of the actions to be controlled by AI, and it's doing a good job. The only major power I played with was Germany(Brits, US and Soviets will follow...). As a minor power, I really enjoyed playing as Romania. Once I've stayed completely neutral and invested everything in technology and by 1946 I was the only country to have the atomic bomb. Another time I allied myself with the Germans and conquered half of Europe. Possibilities are endless. Simply put, I love this game. P.S. If you do invest in this game the DLCs are totally worth it.
