Description

I got soft locked with the garden

I was wondering what exactly I thought about this game. But now it's definitely no more than 3 stars, because I lost a week of in game time building myself into a softlock between a zombie garden and three pole plots. This is because a combination of you can't remove built objects unless you can reach the crafting bench, the pole plots have a very solid square shaped zone you can't cross, and the zombie garden's top left and top right squares (out of 3x3) are easier to move around before building them. Once you build them, they'e a full sized impassible square. And if you stand in the top middle of the zombie garden, finish building all it's parts from there, and have a 3x1 row of pole plots immeidately above it, you can cause this softlock. And the reason I lost an in game week was because I was using food to supplment bothering to go to bed to sleep to restore energy. And you get one guess as to when is the only time this game saves. You could say "but Harvest Moon/Stardew are like that," but I'd reply that those games also have a much more day by day nature. This game gives you the freedom to run around as much as you want, and if you have the food and put up with the tiredness debuff, you potentially never have to sleep. They also clearly wanted a mild alchemy system where you experiment with combinations until you find workings ones, but only successful combinations are tracked. The 2nd tier station also expects you to combine 3 items each time. Combined with how rare some are earlier on, they don't explain nearly every useful combination always starts with a power very explicity on the left input, then a fluid, then a second fluid on the tier 2. Like so many other alchemy systems, you feel more punished for experimentation than rewarded for not going to the wiki. There's also a mild issue of game stuttering every so many seconds, and I've got a decent gaming PC where this is not happening in other similar or more complex games.

Needs more something or perhaps less.

I am trying to like this game. I like the setting and even the odd story, but I find the grind gets me down. I have played this game for more than 100 hours and almost twice through. I liked the art style. I am old enough to remember when most games had to be pixel art style. It makes me feel nostalgic for those days. The sound is mix of the generic sound ,eg footstep, door opens , and the music which is good. The music fits the game and seems to blend from one tune to another seamlessly. The constant tap tap tap tap of the footsteps got on my nerves. The game needs more QoL patches. Things like better handling of making quality items and planting crops. Some way to make sure you are not pushed off a dig spot by materiels when digging or mining. The grind is real in this game. The grind for materials and money. There are times I wanted time to pass faster and slower. So i could move more crates or talk a specific npc to advance a quest. Time is not limited but does not stop either. This game has flaws but also has promise. The promise of a speed run. Where you have everything you need, when you need it and all the quests advance asap. Do I recommend this game. Yes but in a few patches.

Nice, but tedious after a while

I never played anything like this before. The quests and the storytelling are really nice. The visuals are also very well made, especially the river and the village. The music makes you think this should be a relaxing game, but the days cycle makes me more stressed than relaxed. There are also a lot of useless things you have to do manually and that take a lot of time: the endless walking, but also small things like going to sleep to save the game. I didn't feel like continuing, since it is very time consuming and not that rewarding.

Relaxing, humorous, and morbid

I played this when it first came out and again recently. In total I've just ticked over a hundred hours in this game. All in all I've had a really good time with it there are just a few problems that could be fixed. The game can feel a little overwhelming to begin with as there are so many things to do it can feel like you're spinning plates but once you realise there are no time restrictions in the game you can take things at your own pace. Originally the game could get slow at points but with the introduction of the free dlc it manages to deal with most of the repetitive issues. Though the dlc does seem to introduce some performance problems when you have a fair number of 'helpers.' Also the end game still doesn't feel very fleshed out, you can even unlock items that do literally nothing. Which was there when the game first came out so... they've added to the game but not really fixed the errors in the game. For the price I can say it's well worth the money if you like games in the Stardew genre. The dark sense of humor and referential comedy just add to the whole thing. Though that could be hit or miss for some people.

Farming sim for masochists.

This game has much in common with a loved one plagued by emotional instability. You either love them for what they are and are rewarded by your nurturing improving them, or you are slowly pushed away and ground down by the constant effort required to nurture them. *What I liked: - Art style -Soundtrack -A hit n' miss, broadly inoffensive type of humour. I especially liked the politcal jokes and Gerry's banter. -The moral of the story. *What I disliked: -The grind, oh man the grind. Even if you like farming sims, you better be ready to take the time to hit multiple buttons without the ability to queue orders. The Better Save Soul DLC will have you clawing at your eyes with impatience, and cooking feels like a bigger chore in game than in real life, which is odd for a game to make an in game task feel more challenging and time consuming than it's real world couterpart. -The coal seam inside town borders. Do yourself a favour and remember the only coal seam you need is in the top left of the world map. -The economics, put simply the more you supply, the less it is worth, as there is a diminishing returns and the buyer inventories clear out VERY slowly. Some people call this realistic supply and demand issues, but I know medieval society and you can never supply too much iron, steel, silver, gold, wine and beer. Why else is medieval carpentry so afraid of using nails? Not enough supply. A DLC solves this for wine and beer, but you'll still drown in your billets of metals. -Surprisingly little content. You only need a church rating of 50 and graveyard rating of 200 to finish the game and not only can you finish the game without end game content and technologies, filling your grave with lazily altered corpses, but it feels a breeze to do so. I wanted to adore this game as I did Stardew Valley, but at most I feel it wasn't a complete waste of time, but it does leave me with a feeling that I should have saved $70, just gone outside and planted Zinnias instead.
