The worst game in the series
So I spent only 60 hours with it.

One of the best RPGs ever
This game is outstanding. Why? Atmosphere is the key. The music is really good and matches the regions (there are three, Myrtana, Varant and the North Lands). Furthermore each city has it's own look and feel, additionally to some landmarks which also have their own theme. By the way, you can basically go anywhere you want. There's also no real order in which city you do quests. Some regions are shut off, but "only" by guards - which you can either fight or do quests for, or simply take another route. By the way, if you like the game, check out on Vimeo "Nur ein Spiel" - it's a great documentary featuring among else Gothic 3 (only in german, but worth watching).

don't expect too much
As a great fan of Gothic 1 and 2, I found myself very disappointed with this sequel. Graphics and sound are highly enjoyable, of course, as is the huge map to discouver, but sadly these are the only good things to say about this game. The story seems quite interesting as well at first, but you will learn very soon that it will start repeating itself over and over, until you reach the point where you either give up or grind your teeth and play on to see the ending. I did the latter (I always do...) and I did not enjoy it. There must be at least 100 or more nearly identical versions of one and the same story within this game. Go there, bring me that thing, slay these monsters, free that city, kill that thug, kill this, kill that... booooring! Even the faction system (one of the major parts of the earlier games) is quasi nonexistent, since you don't even have to choose a faction until the very end. The combat system is flawed, and there are lots of sniping positions around the map where you can easily kill any monster.

Underrated gem
I can understand why some people would give this game a low rating. Piranha Bytes games are not the best at making first impressions, and with Gothic 3, this was especially so. The game was released in an unfinished state. This resulted in some technical problems, such as bugs and poor performance on many systems. What was worse, however, was that there were some significant gameplay weaknesses as well, such as sub-par storytelling and many quests which were clearly not playtested. I still remember my frustration when faced with escorting a character who was supposedly an experienced hunter, only to have him repeatedly kill himself through a combination of exceptional incompetence and considerable weakness. Nor have I forgotten my disappointment when hearing the anti-climactic and uninteresting dialogue after being reunited with a character which had a lot to answer for. In spite of this, I consider Gothic 3 to be one of the best role playing games out there, even in the state the game was on release. For those who can look past the shortcomings and rough surface, there is a true gem of a game to be experienced here. Perhaps its greatest strength is the game world, which is huge, beautiful, and full of interesting things to see. The terrain is varied, and ranges from snowy mountains in the north, to deserts in the south, with lush forests in between. Considering the size and variety of the game world, it is especially impressive that nothing here seems generic or automatically generated. Additionally, Piranha Bytes have an ability to create worlds which seem alive, with characters which also seem to have their own lives, rather than existing merely for the benefit of the player. Gothic 3 is no exception to this. Other strengths include great atmosphere and music, satisfying character development, a huge number of quests, and the possibility to choose your own path. There are many smaller things to enjoy as well, such as the way the game rewards you with bonus skill points for completing certain quests or performing certain actions, or how a well aimed arrow to an animal's head will do extra damage. The bottom line is that the strengths of Gothic 3 outweigh the shortcomings by far. This is even more true now that the game has been patched by both the developers and the community. If you have any interest in open world role-playing games, you really should not miss this one.

Perfect classic game
Gothic 3 was first RPG that I played in childhood. And it is the reason why I still love RPGs. Firstly in 2008 my PC couldn't even start this game, because of graphic optimization and bags, but after some time Pyranha Bites fixed everything. Nowadays thanks to community and developers who decided to put their game on GOG that I can play this awesome adventure again!
