Gothic

Gothic is a nice game. I found it quite hard, especially during the first half or so, being used to games like Neverwinter Nights and Fallout. What I really loved about this game is the feeling of being immersed in an hostile environment. At any time you can find yourself in deep trouble, whether from monsters that can kill you in seconds or NPCs who will try to take advantage of you. Granted, having challenges that scale comfortably with your character is a lot less frustrating, but the thrill of the unexpected was refreshing for me. However, it certainly is a game where you have to "save often and in different slots". The combat system takes a while to get used to and you'll depend as much on your reflexes as on your character's build. However, the annoyances of the game are manageable and I didn't encounter any showstopper bugs or frequent crashes. Given the game's difficulty, the sense of accomplishment when you actually become stronger and can easily overcome enemies who could kill you in a couple seconds in the beginning is also very intense. Overall, Gothic was worthy of my money and time.

GOG did a bad job here with Gothic. In order to run it is not enough just to install via GOG Galaxy. You also need to fix it with ton of patches to be playable on Windows 10. So that OS support that GOG shows on the game page doesn't quite work, just go to forums and you see that this is true. What even more frustrating that Steam version has those patches embedded and this was done back in 2021. So Gothic there actually works better on modern systems than Gothic from GOG.

Never played it before, but after buying and installing I'm hooked. Don't let all the complaints about controls throw you off. I love not having to use the mouse, if you're looking for a deep game to carry around on your laptop this is it. I look forward to spending many more hours in thee world of Gothic.

This game has it all, eating, sleeping, drinking, nudity, anything you want! All of this bundled up in a great story! Sure there is bugs, and story lines can be broken or taken advantage of...but if you are into a great story with a great RPG atmosphere with skills that can be developed to unlock other rewards this game is for you! Its a great price for one of the grand daddys of free open Role playing games. You can choose when you want to advance the story. Or when you just want to cause problems. It takes time to get used to playing with your keyboard, but once you do it is like second nature. Soon you will find yourself jumping off cliffs into roaring rivers, or teleporting here and there. The weather changes.....just so many little things here and there.. Happy Adventures!

I still remember the first time i played this game. From the beginning, the game hooked me - the first 15 minutes simply wow-ed me - that is how a good game should be! One of the coolest things in it is that you can walk almost everywhere right from the beginning, but you must be careful, because without proper armor, basically everything can kill you at first. The first people you will meet are even telling you stuff like "...and DONT go into the woods" You can also rob people if you'd like, sneaking around at night and opening chests with left-right-combinations. The game area is not very big.... but it is dense. There are lots of NPCs with which you can talk, and it feels like half of them are unique (meaning they have their own). It goes on... EVERYONE is completely voiced in this game... if you just put out your weapon in a crowded place, people will get angry... Later in the game people who are against you but on the low side of the pecking order inside the game will just run away... you can transform into animals to get beyond guards... As you can see, the game has a lot of depth which is hard to explain in a simple review. Once you are finished, you can even play the second game from the series, which is much bigger and continues the story - you will see a lot of familiar faces in there. I give this game 5 stars. For me it is an absolute classic!
