Gorky 17
Description
November 2008. NATO intelligence services report that, for unknown reasons, the Russian military has destroyed Gorky 17, one of the old Soviet Secret Cities. A year later NATO takes over a former Russian secret base built on Polish soil. Diggers discover a laboratory complex in the completely demolished town. After examining the wreckage, NATO decides to leave the lab as it is. But shortly afterwards the town's previously deserted streets are suddenly teeming with hordes of grotesquely deformed creatures. Word soon gets out to the media, making it impossible for NATO to simply destroy the site. So troops are ordered to hermetically seal the area. Nobody is allowed in or out. Will they discover the terrible secret of Gorky 17? And more important - will they live to tell about it?
Be prepared for intrigue, betrayal and even some romance. You will need clever fighting tactics and some brainpower for solving puzzles. Moreover you can search offices, shoot locks and communicate with other characters.

Fighting through a nightmare
I really liked the turn based combat, point & click adventure puzzles, the overall atmosphere, soundtrack and artstyle. The atmosphere throughout the entire games resembles an oppressive nightmare, every corner keeps a new horror waiting for you, many things are not as they seem and the body horror of the enemies just gives me creeps. I also did like the Polish perspective on both NATO and Russia, which feels today even more relevant than back when the game was released. However, there is one critique I have, and that's the sexism in the game, the delegation of female characters to more useless roles and so on. Otherwise I might give 5 stars.

Broken and terrible.
There are games that have questionable play mechanics, overly linear plots, and call themselves RPG's in spite of having little to no role-playing, handing you only pre-made characters with rigid stat progressions, and offering little to no sense of the customization that is the hallmark of an RPG. Quite a few of them survive anyway and ride it out on the strength of their plots and characterization. Gorky17 isn't one of them. I suppose it's possible there is an engaging story in there somewhere, but I never found it. If a game doesn't hook me within an hour or so, I've generally got better games to play. Gorky is one of the handful of games that not only didn't hook me, it repelled me. I love turn based strategy games, and will put up with some real dogs of featuresets and stories to play mediocre turn based strategy games. I love chess too, so you would think Gorky17's infamous chess based ruleset to its turn based battles would be at least decent. Instead I found myself baffled as to why anyone would do this. It makes no sense to combine gunplay and chess movesets, and never gelled as a concept. It's too bad because there were some options that could have made some sense--like all small-arms are queens, grenades are knights, Rockets are Rooks, and knives working as pawns almost works--but that isn't what they came up with. The result feels like a forced metaphor--and it is.

Does not work
Crash right after intro caliming no DirectX. Runs only in software rendering mode, which is... no, there are no words how horrible it looks in that mode, so let me go back and say: it does not run at all.
