Enjoyable, but flawed and short
Would give this game a 3.5 if I could. It has a lot to like, from the interesting setting and well written characters to the good gameplay mechanics that put a nice twist on the usual combat of Metroidvanias. It also does a good job inhabiting the world with characters you can encounter at various points, making it feel ironically lived in despite the desolate planet. The soundtrack is also great, very atmospheric and creepy when needed. Speaking of which, the alien/monster design is also solid, with a few bosses that have some disturbing body horror. Unfortunately the game left me wanting more, in quite a few different ways, and felt like a letdown. The visual variety in areas is severely lacking, with there only being three real tilesets of areas you visit: rocky caves, tunnels made of scrap and insect-filled caves. Past that the visual variety is accomplished via different colors or small added details, and a lot of the game's areas end up feeling the same because of it. The game also lacks a satisfying story arc, after you discover the main hub it essentially just becomes a fetch quest, followed by fighting the final boss with very little build-up. There was set-up for an antagonist that would give you a climactic final battle, but nothing was really done with it. I also felt more could have been done with the pathogen/supernatural angle, which is incorporated into the story. It's a shame there wasn't a location more focused around mutants, or an eldritch creature as a hidden boss playing into the supernatural part of the story. Got the game for free, but I can't say this is worth a purchase at full price. If you like the look of this game wait for a good sale.
