One of the best platformers from mid 90s

This review is for people who haven´t played Gex yet. It´s one of the best 2D platformers that came in mid 90s, and probably on the Top 5 of platformers from the 32bits era. It´s not a masterpiece of the genre like Rayman, but it´s close enough to be a must have for platforming fans. Graphics, music and sounds are really good, what I think it´s the best thing of the game is the core gameplay. You have standards of the genre: Jump, run, attack... But also other moves: Gex can stick to most walls and ceilings in the game, or even the background if you are in closed areas, and you can use your tongue to pick powerups. This may seem the same gameplay as in other platforming games, but it adds interesting twists. For example, when you see a life, you can eat it for an extra life, or break it for a health point. Every powerup grants you something by eating it (shooting fire/ice/electric with tongue, speed up...), but you will just earn a health point if you break it. It may seem obvious to eat it, but when you are far from a checkpoint, you may prefer not dying. The game has 5 zones, each one being harder than the previous one, and it starts being a challenging game. On the first zones, the extra movements may lead you to easier paths, but on later zones, they are a must to survive. Each zone features a boss, which usually isn´t easy at all. There are many hidden areas, although the only mandatory collectibles are remotes which open next stages or zones, which aren´t usually that hidden at all. If I had to say the worst things about the game: There are barely extra paths on harder stages, it uses a password system instead of using a save system, and personally the level design isn´t quite as great as the rest of the game. You will enjoy the main gameplay, but you will sometimes hate the level design, that sometimes can be cheap. Personally, I highly recommend this game to platforming lovers, but proceed with caution if you haven´t played some of them before this one.

Used to play this on my PS1

Great game, but I was hoping for more resolution options. Plus I couldn't get my XBOX One controller to work with it. It's not so bad playing in windowed mode with the keyboard, but I do wish there were a few more options in terms of game settings.

Shut up and take my money

This is far and away one of the best platformers I've ever played, and I've been platforming since 1986. Not without its flaws, certainly, and I've only played the 3DO version, but when I saw this I knew I had to buy it on the spot. Crisp (if low-res by today's standards) graphics, amazing and catchy music, and a special ending for completionists like myself. Just be warned, for the first few levels you WILL trip over your own feet any time you touch the Run button - but once you get with the program (and you get to know the levels better), this is one of the best and fast-paced platformers you'll ever touch.

Almost Perfect Platformer

Amazing little platformer from the 90s that somehow managed to get burried under by big boys of the time. Super fun, with great characters and beautifully varied level designs. Commentary from a player character can be quite risky in games, but Gex pulls it off really well and I love hearing him talk, making 90s cultural references, as I play. It's really a wonderfully nostalgic experience! And also optimized very well by GoG, running very smoothly on my computer :-) The only things that keep it from being a 5 star platformer are the lack of a save system and slippery controls which can sometimes be frustrating. The lack of save system is the biggest flaw and it makes you wonder why they designed a game in 1995 with a password system of all things in which you have to find secrets in the levels to actually obtain the passwords. It's extremely tedious when you're not a little dude anymore with all the time in the world to explore every little area of a level. Nevertheless, a really lovely platformer worth every cent

Why No Save?

It WOULD be an amazing platformer, but the lack of a save feature killed it for me. I kept having to repeat levels that I had completed multiple times as I searched for the next password. It turned an otherwise fun and challenging game into a frustrating grind.
