A boss rush game with some shooting, some swordfighting, both with some complexity to it so that it doesn't get boring. Sounds nice, but most of the time you just spend your time dodging some bullethell, the other parts are over very quick, which means this is mostly just another bullethell game.
If you're a fan of those games you may like it, although it may be too easy for you then (at least judging from what I've seen pure bullethell games do).
Let's be honest, we are accustomed to kill many enemies without noticing any threat. But what if there's only one on each stage?
You will feel the rage, trying more and more just to handle one of his forms then try again. Death is your friend because it gives you expirience - the most valuable stuff here.
There is no +5 to health or +10 to speed bonuses here, only your skill. This torment ends with final boss, or with lack of patience. It's like school but nobody praises you, only gives you more work.
Are you ready to learn? If no you better find something else because nobody will teach you.
Im terrible at these sort of games, but i love it
The game is stylish, arcade-ish and forgiving, and makes you want to get up when you fall down.
Im horrible at these games but i really enjoy the process in this one of studying the mechanics and improving after defeat, i tend to only try 1 fight a day and throughout the day il just ponder my mistakes and retry the next day, gives me quite the enjoyment and infact im still at it, i have only gotten to the 5th boss and i dont mind if this takes me over a year to complete, i play it super casual simply because thats how i prefer it.
The aesthetics coupled with modern interpretation of the electronic 80s era music aka synthwave is just amazing to listen to while struggling to just beat these people up, its worth it for the soundtrack alone.
Furi is the product of a passionate and talented group of people who were (positively) stubborn to follow a single idea: making a boss-rush game. But what would it feel, sound and look like? Well, that's what I'm here for!
Mechanics: The game is short (4-8 hours on average), and, thus, the mechanics are simple, akin to Halo/Destiny in a sense. You have a sword (CQC), pistol (long range engagements), a dash (those bullet-hell sections are not gonna dodge themselves) and parrying. This simplicity, however, is not a downfall. The game will use the first few bosses to teach you to use all of your core controls in synergy, and will throw enough new challenges at you to keep from using simple tactics over and over again. It also features a host of little details for every boss encounter that encourages speedrunning and replaying the game to get some of the hardest achievments.
Aesthetic: It was made in Unity engine, so there aren't a lot of details in the textures, however, this made up with a stunning neon color palette (which doesn't obfuscate any of the gameplay due to smart color choices) and veru fluid and crisp animations, both for objects in the world and the characters. The design of the bosses was handed to Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) which succeded splendidly in giving each boss it's own personality.
Audio: The soundtrack features an array of known synthwave artists that contribute to create a special atmosphere for each encounter (and the walking sections in between). it matches perfectly with the aesthetic and bringsa good array of different emotions to the table. Will keep listening to it till the end of time! Also, solid English voice acting (don't know about other languages).
Final notes:
-The story is simple, but subtle enough to keep you engaged and questioning what's going on, along with some good emotional impact.
- The devs are working a new game called Haven, which isn't Furi 2, but, I believe, will be interesting nonetheless.
I expected this game to be heavier on swordplay, but it is a twin stick shooter with melee. If you like bullet hell you may enjoy this game.
There is a lot of repetition and a lot of trial and error to master each boss. In my opinion the payoff for reaching that mastery is not worth it.
Poor story. Voice acting isn't bad but the dialogue is boring. No combos, techniques or weapons to unlock. The 'stages' between battles consist of walking and listening to a poor imitation of Ninja Ninja/Kuma talk about the upcoming boss. And they can't be skipped, as far as I know.
Graphics are simple, but very stylized, and probably the highlight of the game for me. Soundtrack is also great.
Unfortunately I felt the gameplay lacked depth to keep me interested for more than a few hours. I paid AU$12 for the game, and I can't help but feel that it wasn't worth it.
