Released by LucasArts in 1995, Full Throttle is a classic graphic adventure game from industry legend Tim Schafer, telling the story of Ben Throttle; butt-kicking leader of biker gang the Polecats, who gets caught up in a tale of Motorcycles, Mayhem and Murder.
Now over 20 years later, Full Throttle is back in a remastered edition featuring all new hand-drawn and 3D high-resolution artwork, with remastered audio and music.
Awesome remaster! I would had sworn that the new version IS the original that I played 20+ years ago; were it not for the knowledge that 320x200x8bit graphics do not look like fullHD graphics!
Extremely respectful of the original (throughout the game I kept switching between the remastered visuals and the original and the syncing was down to the frame!)
so happy about it!
Full Throttle is one of those unique games that just nailed it back in the days. This remastered version just proves how good and original the game was and still is.
However, this is not lucas art's greatest adventure game. Far from it. It took me 4 hours to beat the whole thing. The puzzles are easy and the areas are straightforward and unidimensional.
What's really great is the design, the characters, the graphics, the music... back in the days, this was one of the first CD games to come out. Multimedia, graphics and realistic sounds were more important than actual gameplay. Just compare X-Wings to Rebel Assault (gameplay vs. FMV!)
The late 90s were a time when the industry had an opportunity to show that they could be taken seriously... 3d rendered models, nice drawings, real music, voice acting and a movie-type experience was what mattered. Computers were able to generate quality graphics and sound and the CD allowed more data to be transported (no more 10+ floppy discs games! Do you remember Phantasmagoria??)
If you want a great adventure game, pick up Day of the tentacle. If you want to experience a very well tough out game, Full Throttle is litteraly part of gaming history.
Some remastered versions are not worth its title, let alone your time and money. Fortunately, this is not the case of Full Throttle. Double Fine Productions doubled down on player expectations and delivered a fine polish of a true masterpiece of the 90s.
Upscaled graphics that keep the tone of the original, remastered soundtrack, a whopping array of languages (six for subtitles and four for voice acting). Even though it’s a given that not a single translation could ever match the original cast, the foreign actors actually did a fine job of it, a rare thing to find in games. Audio commentary from Tim Schafer and part of the original development team from LucasArts is also a nice touch. More than a hundred and forty concept art sketches are also available.
As for Full Throttle itself, well, what could I say? One of my favorite adventure games from LucasArts. Even though it’s somewhat short and after more than two decades its flaws can shine a bit brighter (a nonsensical plot point here and there, but I’m nitpicking), replaying this version was a genuine pleasure.
The late Roy Conrad delivers a stellar performance of Ben Throttle, with Mark Hammill matching the hero with an awesome villain portrayal of Ripburger.
I could go on, but I’d rather hear from you if you’ve never played it. Even money you’ll never look at yellow bunnies the same way.
I know it's a classic, but this one's good, too. :-) The code runs flawlessly on Linux, everything works as intended: that's for the tech side.
I really like the story and the voice acting, and the graphic indeed match these with pixelised fun low or higher resoluion as well. I possibly need it to play every year or so, just to enjoy the story, as looking at a good movie.
The puzzles are "mostly harmless", do not expect brain overheat, though there are a few "oh dammit now" kind of puzzles as well. Overall very enjoyable.
