Strong art with unfavourable writing

Insane opnening and strong first half of the game. But then the game sabotages itself with at times completely unintuitive and a few times extremely badly communicated puzzles, seemingly never ending dialogues with little to no essence or importance and progressively selfdestructing writing, which degrades into fully perfected and basically inconsequencial nonsense. All my investment in the backstories and questions were rewarded from the game with a big "La La La, we just make something up and the most implausible possibilities are what actually was happening." It is by no stretch a bad game in any way, but play it for the riddles, the really out there characters and designs and for the often great executed unpredictability of this game, because here it delivers, and it delivers really good. But if you are in search for a story, that respects the at times extremely heavy themes it brings up and tying everything together into a meaningful conclusion, you will not find it here and feel (like me) pretty insulted in a way regarding storytelling, because it devolves practically into full, unironic shlock, which in my opinion is inappropriate in regards to the very heavy themes it wants to lift.

Moins bien que je ne pensais

On m'avait dit beaucoup de bien, ici et là sur Fran Bow et me voilà bien déçu. Non pas que le jeu soit mauvais en soi, mais je m'attendais à ce qu'il y a plus loin scénaristiquement parlant. Le coup de la jeune fille traumatisée envoyée dans un hôpital psychiatrique, et qui voit un monde cauchemardesque dès qu'elle ingère ses pilules, c'est vu et revu. Le joueur se pose donc la question tout au long du jeu : ces visions sont-elles la réalité, ou Fran Bow est-elle folle ? Rien de bien folichon, et cette situation est prétexte pour mettre en scène beaucoup de situations gores sans pour autant qu'elles aient un vrai impact. Par exemple, le premier chapitre se situe dans l’hôpital où Fran a l'occasion de voir d'autres enfants "traités" par un personnel médical qui a l'air de se foutre de leur situation comme de l'an 40. Le cliché est grossier. Les adultes sont vilains et complotistes. Personne ne s'étonne qu'un hôpital pour enfants ait son mirador, et qu'une infirmière ait un flingue. Quant aux enfant, n'espérez pas les sauver de leur situation réelle, ni de ce qui les attend dans vos visions : ça n'est visiblement pas le sujet du jeu. Et puis à un moment donné, après une descente aux enfers où différentes réalités se mêlent pour ne former qu'un cauchemar permanent, le jeu part encore plus dans un délire où Fran est matérialisée sous forme d'arbre dans un monde de légumes. Si l'image est belle (mais Fran n'est visiblement pas dans un état vegetatif dans la réalité, donc à quoi bon ?), elle n'est pas plus exploitée que ça et j'ai trouvé par ailleurs cette partie du jeu particulièrement pénible et peu intéressante. Bref, quitte à surfer sur les traumas, je recommande plutôt "The Cat Lady" dans un style tout aussi gore mais plus sérieux, ou dans un registre plus humoristique et cynique : "Harvey New Eyes". Fran Bow a toutefois une belle direction artistique, très ambiance "gothique" mais des énigmes plutôt basiques. Ce jeu ne restera pas longtemps dans ma mémoire.

Fram Bow, fascinating however...

I wanted to give this game a higher rating because I enojyed it very much. First, it was different from what I normally play (RPG's) and the plot itself kept me very intrigued throughout. You are Fran Bow, a young girl who trying to figure out why horrible things are happening to her and why her parents were killed. You go from the mundane world to fantastic places and experince both wonder and horror. Unfortunately, the game is woefully short and ends abruptly with dozens of questions left unamswered. Hopefully, there will be some DLC in the future, otherwise the replayability is down to zero.
