Great game, subpar remaster

Nightdive usually delivers impeccable work, but Forsaken is one of their lesser efforts. While the remaster itself is competent, it suffers from very annoying bugs, mostly related to the save function. For instance, if one picks up a collectible item called crystal and then loads up a save prior to picking it up, it won't respawn again. The most impactful bug, however, are instances where creating a savegame will invariably crash the game. The only solution to this is to restart the level or continue playing from the last save. This bug has been around since 2018, yet to this day nobody at Nightdive could be bothered to fix it. Lastly, quicksaves do not work at all for me. The save bug is particularly bad due to how challenging of a game Forsaken can be. The levels are vast and open, and realizing where to go and how to progress isn't always easy, which is why some levels take upwards of 20 minutes to beat. In addition, the developers like to spawn enemies right behind the player or lay traps, requiring one to adapt a cautious approach. Over time, one learns how the level designers think and gets used to the difficulty, but some level of challenge is always present. Remarkably, Forsaken is almost always fair, save for instances where an environmental hazard kills one, and after respawning one has to pick up all of one's items in the same spot, which of course will kill one again. For situations like these, being able to save one's game beforehand is pivotal, but as mentioned, this fails sometimes. When it released back in 1998, Forsaken was one of the most graphically impressive games around, and it still holds up today. The washed out textures look surprisingly good, and the colorful weapon effects create almost psychedelic images. Coupled with the engaging soundtrack, Forsaken keeps one hooked throughout, and replayability is excellent due to the levels being stuffed with secrets. For those who can handle some frustration, Forsaken is worth a recommendation.

Nightdive can't be stopped

I see people saying this game is hard, but it's pretty easy to just pick up and play as a complete noob to the 6 dof genre thanks to how smooth and responsive everything feels. the game runs amazingly and is still beautiful looking at times, too, thanks to the lighting. The only frustration I've had is finding that little nook and cranny you need to get through to progress. I haven't encountered any issues with the time limits other users are complaining about yet.

Improves Upon the N64 Release by a Mile

I first played Forsaken on my brother's N64 back in 1998. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but hadn't tried the PC version...until Forsaken Remastered. THIS is how you remaster a game! Graphics can be cranked WAY up or WAY down for the look of the 1990s release. Mouse & keyboard controls beat the N64 release by a mile. Both the Windows (10) and Linux (Mint 17.3) versions run buttery smooth. Even my laptop's crappy NVS 3100M (256MB) GPU can run Forsake Remastered, albeit on lowest settings which resemble the N64 release. My desktop's GT 730 (900MHz) graphics card runs Forsaken Remastered maxed out nice and slick. Forsaken Remastered is every bit worth owning.

A rough gem wrapped inside a rough port

Since I loved Descent, Forsaken just seemed just right when it released many years ago on the N64. But while the former still holds up in many aspects, Forsaken does not. It's style over substance. The levels of Forsaken still stand out, resembling old military bases, subway tunnels, banks, ships and more. Incredibly detailed (for the time) and brought alive by colored lighting, animated textures and models as well as tons of environmental hazards. However they also tend to be quite claustrophobic, not giving you a lot of room. Which is where the problems start. At least on Medium difficulty onward, (some) robots tend to be more agile than most player bikes (which have different stats) and can outmaneuver you. And since you have often little room to dodge, shields go down pretty fast. That wouldn't even be a big deal if the game wouldn't love to spawn enemies or mines right behind you. Backing up from an enemy just to be killed by a mine is something the game pulls multiple times and together with some environmental hazards which are occasionally badly telegraphed and can kill you within a second, this makes the game more frustrating than fun to play. Playing on Easy makes things a little better, but only by trivializing the damage output from enemies, not fixing the actual issues. But if you think that this is just the right kind of Gameplay for you, then feel free to add one more star to the rating and ignore these previous paragraphs. Apart from the Gameplay, the port itself gave me some grief. I respect Nightdive a lot, but this isn't their best work. As of November 2019, Version 1.4.1, I had a handful of crashes, a corrupted savegame and when you load a game, glitches occur with doors (showing half-open) and switches (which show as off, even if activated). None of this managed to softlock my game, but it might be possible. There are not many 6DoF games out there, but if you love them, you might still enjoy Forsaken. Otherwise, go give Overload whirl.

A good entry point for the genre

If you want to get into the 6 degrees of freedom genre then Forsaken is a good place to start. It's more forgiving than Descent 1 and 2, it's not trapped in win98 compatibility hell like Descent 3, and it has more varied mission objectives and lower system requirements than Overload. I would recommend giving Forsaken (and 6DOF games in general) a shot if you're tired of linear military shooters. Here you have projectile based weapons instead of the usual hitscan, lots of non-human enemies, a heavy emphasis on verticality, and large intricate levels that you can explore at your own pace (mostly. for some reason the first two levels are timed. the rest of the game is not like that) It's still a pretty appealing looking game thanks to the level architecture and heavy use of colored lighting. This game was made back before all developers became terrified of using secondary colors. The soundtrack is great too. This is a port of the PC version, not the n64 version that had completely different levels. The n64 levels are unlock-able extras. Downsides: You cannot use number keys to select your weapons. You are forced to use a weapon wheel. Xinput only, so your joystick might not work. The game relies too heavily on teleporting enemies, rather than having them on the map before hand like in other shooters of this time period.
