Description
The Forgotten Realms world of Dungeons & Dragons has been home to many a hero and imagination since its publication, producing adventures and stories to be retold and enjoyed for years to come. The Forgotten Realms Archive - Collection One allows you to journey through one such set of adventures: the Eye of the Beholder trilogy, a set of first-person, real-time role-playing games.

Eye of the Beholder A new evil is plaguing the city of Waterdeep, stalking the streets and preying on its citizens. Though initially thought to come from afar, this great evil, known only as Xanathar, instead resides within Waterdeep and, if not stopped, threatens to overwhelm the city. The Lords of Waterdeep believe that the evil lurks in the sewers below and have commissioned a party of adventurers to investigate and foil this nefarious plot. Granted full rights of marque and ownership of any treasure, artifacts or valuables you find on your quest, you must venture into the chasms, discover the nature of this evil and destroy it by any means necessary. Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon Following your quest in the sewers beneath, you and your party are recovering with Waterdeep’s finest healers, when a letter arrives from Khelben Blackstaff, mystic advisor to the Lords of Waterdeep. Trouble is brewing in the Northern and Western regions, and he has tasked you with exploring the land and investigating these incidents. Although nothing has been confirmed, renowned but troublesome archaeologist, Wently Kelso believes the disturbances are related to an evil uprising and the presence of a powerful ancient artefact. These troubles could, of course, simply be the work of unruly bandits, but since Kelso’s previous findings in the sewers of Waterdeep proved true, one would be wise not to easily dismiss his opinion on the matter. Therefore, you should exercise greater care and vigilance as you begin your next adventure. Eye of the Beholder III: Assault on Myth Drannor Having rid the sewers of Waterdeep and the dreaded Temple Darkmoon of the evil forces within, you and your companions are surely deserving of a strong drink, good food and a warm fire. And so, your first port of call is to the nearest tavern, where you slop ale all over yourself and engage in jovial antics as you regale your adventures to your captivated listeners and admirers. However, in the midst of your retelling, the tavern door is thrust open by a hooded figure, whose eyes scan the crowd before locking on you and your party. Approaching you, he quickly introduces himself and explains his reasons for disturbing the festivities; his master wishes you to free the ruined city of Myth Drannor from the clutches of a Lich and restore it to its former glory. Looks like your adventures aren’t over just yet…

With an original story set in the Forgotten Realms universe, the Eye of the Beholder trilogy is based on the Advanced Dungeon & Dragons 2nd Edition’s game rules. Bringing the immersion, wonder and epicness of a D&D campaign to the PC, the Eye of the Beholder is a genre-defining and beloved series for RPG and Dungeons & Dragons fans alike.

The reason why I signed up on GOG.com

There are hundreds of people who will write a deeper, better, more detailed review of these three games. I thank them for being able to put down into words the feelings and throughts I possess. The Eye of the Beholder series is the reason why I first started playing computer games as a child. Why I still play them now. Yes, these games are ugly and flawed. The graphics and music are of their time and have not aged well. Yes, it is tedious grindwork, trying to get through the mazes and endless corridors of the game. But these games... I have stuffed so many hours of my life in these games. I can't help but love them.

Dungeon-Crawling Classics

The first 2 games are true RPG classics. If you're a fan of dungeon-crawlers then don't think twice. Buy them! But beware! None of these 3 great games have auto-map feature. If you're one of those people who lacks the patience to map your explorations manually then this game is not for you. Otherwise, if dungeon cartography is one of your passions, then grab your credit card and purchase these games ASAP.

LOST and FOUND...

The lack of auto-mapping may get some of you a little LOST. However for those who have difficulty with mapping should find full maps in the Cluebooks. (Cluebooks can be FOUND under the Extras to download alongside the Manuals) Also of note (If I remember correctly): 1. You start with four (4) characters, however you can pick up (literally - bones) an additional two (2) characters on your travels, on occasion these will leave the party of their own accord, allowing you to replace them as required. 2. Only your original four (4) characters (of EoB 1/2) transfer to the later games. I've owned, played and loved these and the GoG versions should be compatible with newer systems too, hence my rating.

Awesome dungeon crawl!

This is awesome! The original Eye of the Beholder was one of the very first RPG's I delved into as a young teenager! These games are really challenging! No auto-map and each dungeon floor is a major puzzle with unmarked teleport traps, monsters, and pressure plates that open and close doors all over the place. The floors aren't necessarily linear either. Some of the best weapons and armor can only be found by finishing one floor, going down or two floors and then finding an alternate route back up again to an area that was up to that point inaccessible. Sometimes you need to actually fall through a pit to get to places that aren't accessible by going safely down the stairs in order to find good stuff. The only +5 sword in the entire trilogy is found in a well hidden spot in the first game. If you can find it you can transfer it with your character to EOB II and III!

Adventure for Waterdeep!

The first two titles in the Eye of the Beholder are classics and the third isn't too shabby. Have your graph paper at the ready as you descend into the labrynth beneth the bustling city of Waterdeep. Your harty party of adventurers will need to use thier wits and more to stay alive. Cut off from the world above your only hope is to push onward to danger and victory! Seriously though these are classics in every sense of the word. Taking the best parts of Might and Magic and the Bard's Tale along with the Dungeons and Dragons ruleset and the world of the Forgotten Realms, PC dungeon exploring doesn't get better than this. Once you've finished all three games pick up Archive Col. 3 and start up dungeon hack which uses the same game engine for infinite adventure.
