A Short Story in an Attractive Package

Florence is an interactive storybook about adult life and relationships. There's no bad guy to beat and no choices to be made. You scroll/swipe though the screens to advance the story, some of which require the completion of a simple activity. These include things like hitting snooze on Florence's alarm clock, doing simple math problems,and completing literal puzzles (i.e. with pieces). Depending on how long you spend taking things in, expect it to take between 30 and 60 minutes. I confess that I wanted to like Florence before I experienced it. I'm a big believer that we're still just beginning to explore the possibilities of computers as a storytelling and artistic medium. Not everything has to be edgy, high-adrenaline, or even winnable to be enjoyable or well made. Florence is a great example of that, moreso than I had even imagined when I bought it. The presentation is extremely crisp. There are games with far more invested in them that don't do it half so well, and the way the art, music, and story complement each other is simply superb. There's no dialogue, but Florence doesn't need it. If you're an adult, you know the story, whether it belongs to you or somebody you know. Although I'm not female nor went through a relationship exactly like Florence's, I found it to be quite possibly the most relatable story I've come across. And while on the one hand that could make it ho-hum (and for some it undoubtedly will) I found I felt the same drudgery, happiness, emptiness, and so on that Florence was feeling. What really put Florence over the top for me were a couple of activities toward the end, where the activities themselves were metaphors for the story at those moments. That's the type of higher level design developers should be shooting for. Florence is not going to be for everybody, so do your homework before you buy it, but for the audience it's trying to reach, it can be a really enjoyable or even moving experience.

Review: Florence

A charming visual novel with some unique gameplay touches that embellish the sweet relationship story in pleasing, tactile ways. We are Florence, a young woman and artist stuck in a dreary 9-5 existence whose life has muddied to shades of grey. One day she stumbles across Krish, a cellist playing music in the street and the two rapidly fall in love. It's a story you've seen a thousand times - up to and including the ending, I would wager - but what makes Florence interesting is the way it tells the story. Broken into chapters, Florence opts to be completely wordless, instead conveying everything through images in a beautiful hand-drawn style. There's a feeling of reading an interactive graphic novel as you play, in part because you have to scroll through the images as if you're dragging the pages along, and small interactive elements give texture and colour to the interactions between Florence and Krish, such as having to drag together speech bubbles to show how shy and unsure our protagonist is.

Where is the soundtrack

Nice, short game but since it's lacking the soundtrack on GOG there is little reason to get it here

Une bonne courte histoire interactive.

"A story by mountains" Ils nous ont prévenus, c'est en effet une histoire agrémentée d'un peu de feedback pour ceux jouant avec une manette type X360. C'est très beau, le côté un peu "Webcomic" est bien fait, certains moments sont touchants, les musiques donnent du cachet à l'ambiance, et on laisse l'histoire s'écouler... jusqu'à ce qu l'on finisse le jeu en moins d'une heure. (à moins de platiner le jeu) C'est le gros point négatif, avec la simplicité des interactions : comme dit dans d'autres avis, on a l'impression qu'il manque la suite... et c'est justement le principe ! C'est juste un moment de la vie de Florence qui est racontée, pas sa vie entière. Quand à la simplicité, c'est logique pour ne pas casser le rythme de l'histoire, et elle est justifiée par moments et m'a même un peu bluffé à la fin ! Si vous le trouvez en promo pourquoi pas, en tous cas j'ai bien aimé mais j'aurais bien voulu mettre 3,5/5, car il ne faut pas abuser non plus. (J'en ai vu un se plaindre sur un sujet fâcheux, mais du coup cela se voit qu'il n'a pas joué au jeu...) ---- "A story by mountains", they warned us, it's indeed a tale embellished by little feedback if play a gamepad like a X360 one. It's really pretty, the small "Webcomic" side is well done, some moments are touching, the music adds character to the atmosphere, and we let the story flow... until we finish the game in less than a hour. (unless completing the achievements) It's the biggest drawback, with the simplicity of interactions : like some reviews said we feel that the rest of the story is missing... and that's the principe ! It's a moment of the life of Florence that is told, not her entire life. For the simplicity, that's logical to not break the rythm of the story, and is sometimes justified and it even bluffed me a bit at the end ! If you find it on sale why not, I did like it but I would give it 3,5/5 because it should not be abused either. (I saw one complaining about an untoward subject, but it shows that he hasn't played the game...)

A good short story

A neat visual novel that won't take you much time, but will take you on a journey that I found worthwhile. The gameplay mechanics are super simple, but clever. It is very clear that the mini games sprinkled throughout the story were carefully chosen to complement the narrative, and actually help you "feel" those situations. Now, those mini games are not at all remarkable by themselves, however, Florence's strongest quality is not in the "gaming" aspect but in the experience of reading a story, enhanced by its light interactive elements. As an experience, it was delightful. Even if the basic story is something that has been told a multitude of times before in different mediums and is full of cliches, I found myself enjoying it more than I expected. I'm sure most of the time I spent playing the game I was smiling while taking in the pure beauty in its form factor. Sometimes something very simple can move you so profoundly. And there was at least one moment (when Florence was swept off her feet) in which I could not help but smile filled with joy and awe at the way the art, animation, music and interaction from my gamepad blended so perfectly and beautifully together. By the way, play it with a gamepad with vibration, if possible.
