I found this game incredibly enjoyable. Reminiscent of Indiana Jones, as well as pulp adventure stories. Quirky and humorous, it doesn't take itself too seriously as it plays with a ridiculous plot and plenty of tropes. As someone who was looking for an afternoon of something low-key and a fun adventure, this totally fit the bill. None of the elements were overly difficult once I got used to the control system (mostly an issue of understanding the order of things). I kept forgetting that I had the "move" option, which had me stuck a couple times.
It's free, so really, how are you going to lose out by giving this a shot?
This game had a lot of reasons why I would have never played it--
Never heard of it. Not in anyone's top 10. Not a product of the big names Sierra, Lucas Arts, or even Revolution.
And yet there I was, in the mood for another old-school point and click that I didn't have to pay for. So I downloaded the game... and I'm very glad I did. This game was just simply fun.
It doesn't do anything *great*, but I was impressed with how much this game dots its i's and crossed its t's to make sure every aspect of a good adventure game was addressed: puzzles, story, character development, UI controls, audio. It just came together very well and was entertaining to play.
In Depth:
-Graphics. This is the biggest weakness of this game. Its a 1995 game with 1992 graphics. Compare it to screen shots from any other '95 adventure game, and you'll see a big drop in quality.
-Characters. My west-coast bias makes me dislike a lot of the characters because they they all have this brash Bronxiness about them. That having been said-- there was enough character development for me to have that opinion in the first place. I got to know people in this game. It was nice. Some of the female characters are a bit... weak... but otherwise, you can tell there was effort here.
-Story. This game has story from the get go. No complaints here. I particularly like how it had multiple parts. There were a couple times I thought I was almost at the end of the game, to find, no, there's a whole lot more to go. I liked that for a game so relatively large, it was broken down into manageable chunks.
-Puzzles. Very well done. Nothing terribly illogical that stands out in my mind, but a few that really made me sit and think for a bit.
In summary-- nothing in this game is really done perfectly. But everything is given some care and development. Makes for a game I was surprised to enjoy as much as I did.
This game takes direct inspiration from Monkey Island and Indiana Jones, doesn't chicken out from declaring that, and makes an awesome job out of it. Smooth, logical, sarcastic and with that touch of pulp that the inspiring games lacked (it even shows dead bodies!), I personally loved it.
Nice use of zoomed in characters for the cutout scenes as well, very Monkey-like, helps the atmosphere.
Not much more to say, in general very positive attitude, enigmas and dialogs. Possibly a bit too easy enigmas sometimes.
The Point and Click for itself was ok, but the German Voice acting.... to put it lighty was Jawring.
Feya = annoying loud and no Pop Filter
Joe = emotionless but could refrase without reading from script
Sparky= 8 years old reading in front of class for the first time.
the Evil doctor = was one of the few really good ones.
all in all i would give it a 4 but the voice acting was soooooo bad i only made it through 50% of it before quiting
This game was very entertaining and fun. The puzzles were at times very fun and challenging, but other times I had to go rush to the walk-through pages because the solutions were so hidden. There is one puzzle that doesn't even give you a hint at what the answer might be, just gives you the puzzle and no other information.
It was also hilarious. When you'd be in the middle of a serious scene, there would be a cut away of some completely different thing. The characters had some fun personality's and detailed back-story's.
In all, I believe that the Flight of the Amazon Queen is worth it. Despite the confusing puzzles, it made me a very happy gamer.
