Good brawling, limited replayability
I can appreciate the depth of the combat system here -- goes beyond what I'm used to in side scrolling brawlers. Also surprising and fun is the branching path system -- if you turn and run from the start, there is a runaway storyline. The core gameplay is pretty fun and you can add a couple of buddies to play with you. That said, there are some noteworthy and largely unforgivable omissions that are pretty disappointing: -No drop-in/drop-out play. I started a game with two other people and one had to leave part way through. There was no option for that one player to exit the game, so we had to either quit and lose our coins, or have someone do double duty. Players can't join in the middle of a game either. It is nice that it allows resuming a previous session if you start with the same character/difficulty. Then again, the reason you probably quit was because of the insane difficulty spikes toward the end. -Difficulty spikes. Everything seemed to be ramping up pretty steadily until the raft. Everything after that is brutal -- enemies are suddenly much stronger and harder to take down, have more throw-counters and appear in far greater numbers per group. I've been playing the game off and on all day and have made it to the end boss on Normal, but cannot for the life of me come close to beating him. On Normal. There are people who want a crazy challenge -- save that for Hard mode. You can unlock an Easy mode, but it seems almost boringly easy in the opening stretch. -Bonus unlockables do virtually nothing to extend the life of the game. There are only three main characters. You can spend in-game coins you earn by playing to unlock other characters, but they are painfully simple and are only playable in 1v1 Battle Mode, not the Story/Arcade mode. Castle Crashers set this standard for me years ago, so if I'm going to unlock characters, I want them to be worth unlocking. The rest is outfits and "tips" etc. Set your expectations accordingly.
