Live by the dice, die by the dice.
I know. A truly competent captain can command their way out of any situation. Most captains don't have to deal with their crew turning into a pillar of salt when they arrive to port. FTL is a slow paced plate juggling type of game where one or more of your plates may have lit dynamite placed onto it. • The ever advancing doom field in the form of the fleet. You can never rest, never fully explore, and often have to make a choice between bad & worse. Any time spent in this field pitches a high class cruiser to fight. • Random events that by choice or otherwise, can remove your veteran crew, disable a system, damage the hull, and more. There are no odds listed. • Just straight up be starved of whatever resource you need. Running a drone ship? Good chance they'll never show up in item pools. • The final encounter is playing on just slightly a different ruleset to ruin any strategy you were working with, unless you had specifically been preparing precisely for it. It also has several traps, gotchas, and "thought you were clever" moments. • Many of the ship unlocks require doing suboptimal things or are spiteful in how byzantine they are. In spite of all that, I know exactly why the game is popular, and how people are able to command around those issues. The game oozes atmosphere, has fascinating secrets, and is real-time with infinite pause. I understand what the game appeal is. Just that I'd rather be able to load the dice into my favor.

It is hard... It is fun
You can play it for days or weeks, waiting for a perfect run to beat the game just once.

Phenomenal
FTL: Faster Than Light is a great game. Combination of something like Star Trek: Bridge Commander with Rogue-like RPG. Randomly generated systems and encounters that never repeat and you'll never go through the same game twice. FTL is deceptively simple, you are just clicking on few buttons but there's a lot of strategy and decision -making behind actually doing good in FTL. Managing your crew, specializing them, keeping your supplies of fuel and ammo up and possibly buying upgrades and new ship parts at stores. There's pletny to unlock and also to do. With the randomly generated universe you will hardly run out of fun with FTL. If you at all are a fan of Star Trek and other sci-fi series and wanted to try and command your own space-ship there are hardly any better games than FTL to try.

Great game ruined at the end
If you are a casual gamer or don't have a lot of time to sink, don't buy. You just end up _wishing_ you could play this, but you can't. The game is really nice and addictive. Two things make it impossible for a casual gamer to play it: * lack of save game - you can only save when you exit. And the game gets deleted when you continue. The fans will tell you "but that's the point of the game". Fair enough. This is not such a big deal, though, as the game on easy is not that hard: I reached the final battle on the first play. Which brings us to: * impossible final battle - the first fight with the final boss is good, hard but not impossible. The second battle is way way harder than anything else. The strategies that you may have developed on other ships simply don't apply. You may have to upgrade the ship with a final strategy in mind... I'll never know. You spend a couple of hours to get a chance at the final battle, and you always come with a ship that is significantly different (the equipment you find is chance). Maybe if you do that tens of times, at the end you figure out what can work. I simply don't have the time to do that. If someone wrote a mod to make the end not that impossible, this would be a great game for the casual gamer too. Like this, is just a frustrating experience... :-/
