This game isn't a Far Cry game. This game isn't even really a first person shooter. In a first person shooter, you'd spend most of your time shooting things. In this game, however, you spend the vast majority of your time driving. And not only are you driving constantly, you're driving vehicles that are so slow, you could legitmately run places faster with Feral Speed in Far Cry Instincts or Maximum Speed in Crysis, while looking at flat grey and brown jungles and savannahs, all to do anything. The lack of a proper fast travel system and the fact that most missions are always on the other side of the map just adds more to the monotony. This is the crippling flaw with Far Cry 2. Even though there are other issues, such as the broken stealth and simplistic shooting mechanics, those pale in comparison to how excessive the driving is. It's easily one of the most boring games I've ever played.
You want a good Far Cry game? Go buy Far Cry 1 instead. And if you want a game with great attention to detail and fun sandbox gameplay, go buy Crysis and Crysis Warhead instead.
The game is fun and addictive but is some way hard . So many times i was returned after being killed that i left it and played Far Cry 5 - the best Far Cry !
Far Cry 2 Fortune Edition delivers thrilling first-person shooter action in a captivating African landscape. Engaging storyline, diverse weapons, and strategic gameplay make it a must-play for open-world fans. Minor graphical issues and occasional repetition don't overshadow the overall excitement. Recommended!
I probably forgive this game more than i should, but I'll get to why later.
This is a FPS where you are a hired mercenary with the goal to take out The Jackal in which had given arms to difference sides of a civil war conflict in Africa.
And here's what I like:
1. It's set in Africa. I don't ever see any FPS's set in Africa, it's always in America or Russia or some city in Asia, and I"m all for this setting.
2. The guns. While there isn't anything really special about them, we do discover that they were from WW2, which makes them liable to break. It gives this wonderful tension that at any time the thing that you need to defend yourself will jam or break apart.
3: The people. Why the fact that apparently everyone in Africa can speak English for some stupid reason kinda kills my immersion a bit, but the fact that they can be threatening but also give a bit of world building is kinda refreshing.
4: Scouting. With a quick view from your binoc's, you can see where the resources are, how many enemies there are, and hence plan how to deal with them.
And what I don't like:
Standard Sandbox: It suffers from the condition of all sandbox games, an open world with a skeleton plot mission surrounded by side missions that don't contribute to the main story, I mean yeah there are few things changed in the plot but the ending will stay the same.
Like I said, I'm probably being too nice to it, but I enjoyed my time in the game. And though the idea of the world could be done much better like actually used it as a story instead of a setting, I'm going to recommend it.
Nope. I couldn't do it. I bought this game a while back hoping that it would be similar to the first one - great graphics, great open-world, fun, fast, exciting gameplay with just a few updates. Not to mention, the Africa setting looked incredibly neat, and I looked forwards to enjoying some open plains and other such African landscapes. Plus, I'd heard that the fire effects were good, and that fire could be used to your advantage on the battlefield.
While some of those things may be true, the rest of the game is just so incredibly dull that it failed to hold my attention for more than 40 minutes or so at a time, and in fact, I never finished it (I have played and enjoyed both Crysis and FarCry 1 to a near-ridiculous level, so I'd been expecting a similar level of quality). Now, I'm going to mention a major plot point, but it's not a spoiler, since it's the first thing that happens in the game: You contract malaria. There's nothing fun about that. Your character, who could have the potential to be a badass on a mission in Africa, is now reduced to a pill-munching sad-sack apparently to afflicted by his disease to do what he had initially set out to do. So instead of FarCry 2 being a vast, open world to explore and scout out enemies in, you end up spending most of your time grinding for medication and abiding by some arbitrary ruleset led by crappy AI. Oh, did I forget to mention that part? There's a 'territorial boundary' system in certain town areas where if you step over an invisible line, people start shooting at you. It makes little to no sense, and it ruins the feel of the whole game being 'open,' especially when you're limited to very specific parts of towns. The timescale also has some issues. You need to make sure that you keep checking the time so that you can do things when they're supposed to be done. It feels tedious more than it feels fun. Yes, I get that it's supposed to have some 'immersion enhancing qualities,' but other games that have realistic timescales don't cause your heart to prematurely conk out because you didn't take your pills on time.
Now, in order to qualify, I'm not saying that this is a 'terrible' game, just not a very good one. The graphics are good (though not as good as Crysis, in my opinion) and the FPS mechanics are pretty tight (even though the AI is God-awful and have a tendency to have laser-accuracy before you can even see them). However, If you like following a strict set of rules that don't apply to reality while wandering a surprisingly limited open world, this game is for you. Otherwise, I see very little redeeming qualities in this game, and I would not suggest it to anyone.
But, for the sake of GoG being a generally awesome distributor, I suggest you pick up Alan Wake or the Witcher 2 if you're looking for a graphical powerhouse with great gameplay. Especially the Witcher 2. Gives me chills just thinking about it.
