Le marin indépendant Jack Carver maudit le jour où il a posé le pied sur cette île. Une semaine auparavant, une arrogante reporter nommée Valerie lui avait proposé une somme d’argent pour la conduire jusqu’à ce paradis immaculé. Peu après avoir accosté, le bateau de Jack fut toutefois accueilli par des tirs d’artillerie en provenance d’un mystérieux groupe armé grouillant sur l’île.
Son bateau détruit, son argent évaporé et la séduisante Valerie brusquement portée disparue, Jack se trouve maintenant confronté à une armée de mercenaires dans la nature de l’île, avec pour seules ressources son pistolet et ses méninges pour survivre. Mais plus il s’enfonce dans la luxuriante canopée de la jungle, plus les choses deviennent étranges.
Jack fait la rencontre d’un membre du groupe armé qui lui révèle de terrifiants détails sur les véritables intentions des mercenaires. Il soumet à Jack un choix déconcertant : se battre contre les féroces mercenaires ou condamner la race humaine au bon vouloir d’un maniaque.

I don't believe in giving games 5 stars, and suspect that the judgement of many gamers about old games is often distorted by nostalgia. For me, nostalgia doesn't apply here. I played it in 2012, albeit on 2004 hardware, and it blew me away. The stunning graphics; the huge, detailed, varied (although the entire game occurs on a small group of tropical islands) environments; the smart, difficult and (later in the game) frightening enemies; the sandbox approach (there are engagements that can be avoided). Real environments, real enemies, real fear, real challenges. If you play fps's, then this game is a must. If you don't play fps's, play this to alter your view.
I bought this game in 2020 and it would not start on my Windows 10 AMD Ryzen 5 laptop with Vega graphics so I kind of just forgot about it. Then, in 2022, I felt a jolt of inspiration. I used to go to great efforts back in the day to make lesser games run on far worse hardware with good results. Why couldn't I do that now?
After a bit of Google-fu, I found out that all it needed to start was to add the line 'r_ShadersPrecache = "0" ' to the system.cfg within the Far Cry directory and boom, it runs at full settings on my laptop!
It's a pretty fun game. Keep in mind it's from 2004 so don't expect it to play like a modern title but as long as you have an open mind, it's a solid shooter with nice visuals and it'll run way better than it did in 2004 haha.
Imagine you're being shot at by multiple enemies that you can't see, who are unerringly accurate even from great distances, and that a few hits mean you're dead. Repeat ad nauseum; and that is basically how Far Cry starts and continues. Maybe it's a good shooter, I don't play enough of the genre to make an informed comment, but for the casual gamer this is a no fun, tedious grind. Avoid.
There was a time in game history, at the beginning of the years '00, when a gamer had to choose side: AMD vs Intel, ATI vs nVidia, Quake vs Unreal, Doom3 vs HalfLife2.
Then, at least for what concerns me, came Far Cry.
Far Cry hit the stores before HalfLife2 and Doom3 (which were the "next gen FPS" of the time). Nobody was expecting a game like this.
Amazing graphic, sandbox gameplay, fast paced shooting, stealth mode, vehicles.
This is one of my top 10 FPS of all time and it is the one that really showed me what kind of depth a "mindless shooter" can achieve.
True, Deus Ex and No One Lives Forever came before and they honestly broke the barrier of their genre. But this... It was like a world opened in front of my eyes. Every mission was screaming "freedom".
The sequels and the pseudo sequels (Crysis) are just a linear consequence of this one.
Games like this are one of a kind, it's like the first Gothic: they come and they change the way you see at a genre.
You HAVE to play this.
Far Cry is a game that broke me. The game is structured in a way that makes it very hard. but not like cuphead hard, which is a difficulty that makes you go "oh, I died, but at least I'm confident that I'm getting better", its like NES era hard - which is the kind difficulty that makes you shout "how did that merc see me from 2km away" and search for cheat codes on the internet.
Which is exactly what I did.
I made it through the first 19 chapters of the game with only the Save game cheat (by the way, you can't save in this game, the game works with a series of autosaves that you can't control) but at the last chapter was where I drew the line, even the save game cheat didn't help me with it. At that point I was so desperate to finish the game that I edited one of the game files so I would make 1000% damage on the enemy AI, and the enemy AI would make 0% damage on me.
I've killed the final boss with a pistol. And no, I don't feel shame about it.
Other than that, the game is surprisingly good. the graphics looks nice on max settings (although the human models still look like they're from the early 2000s). the gunplay feels good and balanced, the world feels rich and full (kinda) thanks to the mercs talking to each other from time to time, and I really like some of the mechanics like the binoculars and cry-vision.
However, I do feel that the story is very shallow, or that at least it should be shorter. I think I've counted three times that Val was kidnapped, and I've lost count on how many times told that "yeah, you need to go there to exit the island, But just before you do that, could you retrieve a PDA or a bomb or a key or whatever?" or "Yeah, just go there to find Valerie... Oh, she's not there? well sorry Fucko, I forgot to tell you that they moved her to the other part of the island 30 fucking minutes ago, 'guess you'll need to go there, man".
Long story short, if you're a Dorito snorting, mtn dew chugging hardcore gamer you'll probably like this game.
