Far from perfect; lots of hidden details

Thanks Bethesda / GOG - if you want the rest of my money, release Starfield on GOG ASAP! TLDR review: Each time I play it I find minor hidden details items left and right - quite the experience! Bought Fallout 4 day one on PS4 - Nice FPS features versus previous installments. Other than the 30 FPS cap on PS4 it was actually more enjoyable as a console game with controllers than on PC for some reason. I have hundreds and hundreds of hours logged with at least 15 -proper- character builds (tons more to test and fool around) and I never completed the main quest for any of my characters – too bland - but the game is still great overall! 5800x3D + 6900 XT (unlocked @4K 120FPS) and still see FPS dips in Boston - quite sad to see this was never fully fixed... - Preston with his radiant quests can get quite annoying... Sad that these cannot be controlled via game options or via in-game dialogue! - Also, forcing a Charisma of 6 to get workshops is one of my majoor pet peeves with this game! - No native widescreen support and no FPS / FOV control make no sense for a recent game! P.S. I don’t understand why people complain about the HD Texture pack - the difference is SO obvious - in particular in 4K - HOWEVER some textures take around 30 seconds to come up - hope this gets fixed eventually!

Bland

After New Vegas, this is several steps back. Like Skyrim they stripped down the RPG elements to a bare minimum. Quests are generic, the open world huge but boring and bland, and the Creation Engine his hopelessly outdated. Want a great post-apocalypse simulator? But S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, install the Autumn mod and forget you ever heard about Fallout.

Construction, mon amour !

La direction artistique est vraiment soignée, c'est un véritable plaisir que de parcourir le Commonwealth surtout que l'exploration gagne énormément en verticalité avec la possibilité de monter sur les bâtiments via les escaliers. L'histoire est hélas très convenue et peu inspirée. Elle aurait gagné à être plus travaillée et surtout avec des rebondissements plus surprenants notamment à notre arrivée à l'Institut. Les factions sont sympas mais le système de quêtes vous donne l'impression d'être juste le larbin qui abat tout le travail pendant que vos collègues sirotent leur Nuka-Cola en ricanant. Il est bien triste de voir que cet épisode perd énormément de possibilités et de RPG par rapport aux précédents volets. Il n'y a plus de choix ou de karma limitant ainsi grandement la rejouabilité tout comme les romances qui ne servent à rien et sont pliées en quelques dialogues. Le système de colonies est intéressant. En tant que fou de jeux de constructions, j'ai été ravi de pouvoir créer des structures, les placer, améliorer la vie des habitants et les voir évoluer. Sur le papier, c'est du lourd mais dans la pratique... On manque de possibilité comme par exemple le fait qu'on puisse pas nettoyer les bâtiments et voir nos braves colons se coucher avec un squelette à côté de son lit... Allons ! C'est pas sérieux ! Il faut absolument travailler cet ajout ! Avec de véritables options d'optimisations et de décorations, les colonies pourraient être un jeu dans le jeu ! Les DLC proposés sont de bonne qualité en plus de proposer chacun une ambiance différente du jeu de base. Celui avec l'abri 88 que l'on doit construire aurait pu être excellent mais hélas c'est ici que le système de construction montrera ses limites. Bien que trop simplifié par moment, Fallout 4 reste un jeu agréable, doté d'une immense durée de vie, il vous occupera une centaine d'heure si vous vous investissez dans le développement des colonies. Je recommande chaudement !

An engrossing but shallow ocean

While I really enjoy Fallout 4 and have put a ton of hours into it, it really can't compare to previous Fallout titles in terms of story-telling or RPG-elements: It's more of an open-world looter-shooter (with mild RPG elements) than a proper RPG. This is emphasized both by the much simplified perk system and the infamous conversation wheel. However, if you avoind going into the game with the wrong expectations, you will still find an extremely worthwhile title: Bethesda's penchant for environmental story-telling and attention to detail are still very much around, so exploration and looting are a real joy. While there is some copy-and-paste for scenery going on, the environments are still huge and overall extremely varied. Both marked and unmarked side-missions are my main drive when playing this game, whereas the main story is easy to forget about (or put on the back-burner). Both major DLCs (Far Harbor, Nuka World) are great extensions - in very different ways - adding a huge amount of new content to explore. Survival Mode in particular feeds that masochistic STALKER-streak I suffer from. Other players may find endless hours of joy in building and pampering their settlements. It's important to note that the large amount of freedom also comes with drawbacks, such as a lack of direction. A ton of enjoyable content is also pretty shallow: Most optional dungeons or areas come with little side stories, like the one about a pre-war serial killer displaying his victims in the tunnels below Boston, or the hunt for a legendary historical treasure. But while these are great, they never lead to anything bigger. Haunted ruins or Lovecraftian quarries hint at greater mysteries, but never amount to anything. Similarly, many awesome little quests like the one about a Raider-killing murderer with an artistic streak end with just a little bit of loot - where an entire quest line would be warranted instead! Fallout 4 suffers from a lot of missed potential from not going deeper.

A lot of entertainment for the money

Fallout 4 does some things really well and other things not so well. But, in my opinion, the good things outshine the bad and, honestly, the bad things aren't really "awful" but rather "disappointing". The gunplay feels great, exploration & discovery are rewarding, the settlement building is brilliant and the companions & their backstories are, mostly, well done. The disappointments were the shallow dialogue options, the bad gun design (the famous "assault rifle", for instance), the lazy way the enemies scaled up (spoiler: they just become more bullet spongey) and the fact every single playthrough felt the same regardless of how you played. I never got the feeling that I was affecting the world in any meaningful way, positive or negative and I couldn't play through the game as an antagonist, selecting evil dialogue options. But that aside, I've had a tonne of fun with FO4 over the years, which I bought on Steam at release. A lot of folks seem to hate on this game simply because "It's not like Fallout New Vegas", which I'm not sure I fully understand. FO4 is a stepping stone in the evolution of the franchise and bridges the gap between FO3 and FO5. New Vegas felt like a separate, arguably superior, game in its own right and F76 was simply an MMO experiment which, for the most part, failed. Even if you're on the fence and only considering the base game, it's still worth buying the DLC for no other reason than because it's a pre-requisite for installing and running Sim Settlements 2. Sim Settlements 2 is a community mod with extraordinary production values and boasting some first class voice acting and extremely well-written storylines. It's so good and there's so much content to be found, that it could shine as its own separate game. Think along the lines of the relationship between DayZ and Arma 2... After 1700+ hours, I can't really grumble about my time in FO4 and the GOTY edition is a bonkers price. I can whole heartedly recommend it.
