Master the Stealth Flying Challenge!
You control pitch, roll, thrust, altitude and all the factors that increase your radar profile and give you away. If you're new to aviation, training missions will teach you the basics first. And when you're ready for the F-19 challenge, advance to the skills of stealth flying. You'll be amazed at what you can do if nobody knows you're out there!
Played this on my C-64. This version was actually better than the PC/DOS remake a few years later (F-117). What it lacked in graphics it made up in data, accuracy and tension. If you played Red Storm Rising or any of the sims from Microprose in that time period, you know what I'm talking about. People today will find it restrictive and primitive but at the time it was ahead of its time as the first game to simulate stealth aircraft missions.
F-19 focused on secrecy, much as a spy would avoid conflict and have to think quickly, so the combat aspect is downplayed to highlight using cover, technology and smart flight plans to get in, drop a bomb, and get out.
A worthy game but not for those who don't come from that time.
I know f-117 has best graphics, gameplay and whatsever, but this game has finally found home. Saw it bought it! Not tried yet, doubt I'll play it soon but I will play it again, no doubt. A lost masterpiece found!
Learning is a bit steep but u'll get a very good time.
I grew up on this game. My uncle Tom gave it to me and I fell in love with sneaking under the radar. Things can get pretty tense and while I like F-117 it feels rather fast. I played it on the old Tandy 1000 TL, and recently I was fooling with dosbox and got the tandy sound to work. Let's see if we can get it to work with this version because it's much better than the pc speaker.
As a child, when I first got my hands on F-19 Stealth Fighter, I simply couldn't appreciate its true depth. Now, three decades later, I've had the pleasure of fully immersing myself in its brilliance. If you're a fan of stealth games, this is an absolute must-play, just with a state-of-the-art aircraft as your protagonist.
The core gameplay loop is ingenious for its time: you set various parameters like location, enemy AI difficulty, and landing realism, and the game generates a unique mission with primary and secondary objectives. After poring over the briefing, you meticulously craft your flight plan and select your loadout. Once airborne, you're equipped with a suite of techniques and aircraft subsystems designed to keep you invisible. But beware: if you're detected on a high difficulty setting, good luck! As a bomber, your F-19 is slow and cumbersome, making it a poor match for the various fighters and interceptors that will swarm you.
Visually, the graphics were impressive for their era, and today, let's just say they're perfectly playable. On the control front, there's no rudder support, and disappointingly, no dedicated throttle axis on your joystick, which requires some adaptation. Nevertheless, the game remains perfect for picking up and playing an occasional mission. For the best audio experience, be sure to seek out the Roland patch – using a CM32L or MT32 will drastically improve the sound design.
My main critique revolves around the campaign's lack of depth. It's essentially an endless grind of accumulating points and medals without dying until you eventually grow bored, which prevents me from giving it a perfect 5-star rating. I also wished for more night missions to truly leverage the stealth aspect.
However, these are minor quibbles. F-19 Stealth Fighter is a fantastic game, and at its sale price, it's absolutely worth every penny – especially if, like me, you enjoy diving deep into the mechanics of the games you play.
I haven't played this game in over 20 years and I'm not going to buy it now. This game was great for its time, and considering some of the games I've played since getting back into gaming, great all time. Anyone who grew up with this will attest to that.
