The phantom BOOM!!!

Back when they crammed all the goodness in few Mb ... and no DLCs ... Just look at that list of theaters. This sim made history and it's not easy to write about it. I could very well start by saying that no other sim since then came so close to delivering the real stealth war feeling (that is of course if you pick the realism mode, which is where the sim shines). Dodge radars, dodge radars, dodge radars, drop the pickle, dodge those MISSILES, land home. Phew! That was a close one, but they'll never know what hit them. Well yeah, maybe DIDs F22TAW could do that too, but in F-117 you can only hide, no way of hitting back at anyone. You are a winged sniper and your bullet has 1000 lbs. The feeling is right there encoded in those few Mb and you should take those ancient graphics as a form of poetry. That being said you can't go wrong with this as it will keep you on the edge of the seat just as it did years ago.

THIS is the one!!!

I hardly know where to start. OK..here's a start. Buy this game. This game is in the top three of all PC games I have ever played. For this game, specifically, it has the whole package. The graphics are certainly early 90's..but the game play...the GAME PLAY, is marvelous. The suspense of flying along at 40% power, at 198 knots, and at 500 feet, skirting all known air defenses is just ... remarkable. I have never seen this level of suspense captured, before or since, by ANY game. The mission generation system is excellent. The flight dynamics are excellent. The manual and documentation is excellent. The ability to control the plane using the keyboard is excellent. The weapons loadout and flight preparation is excellent. The after mission review, with possible medal award is done beautifully. In short, there is NOTHING that I don't remember fondly about this game. Please note that at the time of this writing, 34 out of 34 people gave this a rating of 5. THIS is the one I have been waiting for..just like I waited for Darklands, and Master of Magic. Please drop the (modest) amount of money, you will not regret it. I tell you, in complete seriousness, that there is no real upper limit that I would have paid to purchase this, this out of the box DOSBOX friendly, flying by the seat of your pants friendly, best-ever flight sim ever produced! Truly the best GoG moment ever to see this on sale today!!!!!!!

Oh wow its actually here!

22:00 takeoff ; 22:05 take out SAM site with HARM missile ; 22:07 divert route to avoid launched enemy fighters ; 22:15 take out main target factory with Maverick Missile and turn back ; 22:20 take out two enemy fighters with long distance AMRAAM missiles ; 22:25 Damn I'm spotted by a SAM site! 2 missiles incoming ; 22:25:40 release chaff and flares ; 22:25:41 one missile misses! ; 22:25:47 Damn I'm hit! Check systems... flaps damaged and bay doors stuck on open. Gear, Engine Fuel OK, but the bay doors are going to make me more detectable :( 22:28:20 Enemy fighter at 2'o clock has a radar lock. Incoming missile! Return fire with remaining AMRAAM. 22:28:35 I'm hit!! Fuel lines severed! Enemy fighter destroyed but I can't eject - I'm still over enemy territory and will be captured. I'll try to reach friendly territory and then eject 22:33 Eject! Land in Friendly area, receive medal -schweet... (btw there is a fighter mode if you want to dogfight in the game)

A Classic - Instant Buy

The graphics are low polygon count with triangular mountains. The horizon is a few strips of gradient coloured sky. The flight model is fairly simple. These are the points to get out of the way first for anyone under thirty looking at this. The game is white knuckle tense: there is nothing to compare with flying in darkness, straight into enemy territory, OVER or AROUND SAM sites and (depending on realism options) unable to fire back at scouting enemy planes, all the while keeping your Stealth Fighter just above stall speed and flying just above ground level to minimise radar cross-section. This consumed many night-into-mornings for me. There are a stack of scenarios and though the campaign missions are repetitive in structure, they are dynamically created. Five stars from me - no question. GOG - keep the old school Microprose games coming: I look forward to F14 Fleet Defender, Gunship 2000, Hyperspeed. I may have already got these in various guises and various dosbox versions on my computer somewhere, but GOG always seems to get rid of the last niggles and gets them running superbly, well worth a couple of bucks - I remember spending $60 on this in its big box back in the day...

Played as a kid, even better as an adult

As a child of the early 80's, I was definitely too young to really understand all the mechanics of the game. I do remember having a blast playing it at low difficulty settings and bombing the crap out of stuff. Now that I'm pushing 40 and actually understand the mechanics of the flight sim, radars, enemy fighters and SAM sites this game is a ton of fun and really tense. I would love a modern graphics remake with the same basic gameplay. I know DCS world is a thing but this would be in a world of it's own.
