As the leader of the expedition, you will face difficult decisions about the use of your troops and your resources, as well as how to engage with the factions of the savage New World. Will you defy history and be a diplomatic envoy of peace? Or will you be a ruthless conqueror determined to lay all of the Aztec Empire at your feet?
Expeditions: Conquistador is a tactical roleplaying game with a touch of strategic resource management and a pinch of choose-your-own-adventure. Conquistador is set in a rarely visited part of history which is rife with mystery, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned violence.
Exotic historical setting with far-reaching ethical implications - balance your relations with the natives against the wishes of your expedition members.
Intuitive and flexible turn-based combat system with highly varied and detailed battlefields that will keep you on your toes.
Manage the morale, rations, and resources of your expedition as you overcome the dangers of the Aztec territories.
There is some strategic depth to it, especially in the beginning it is quite tough. I like how you really have to role play - you select companions with similar view to yours (altruistic racists, anyone?) and then your squad is happy if their views align with your actions. It does get a bit repetitive (after 2 nights of not sleeping because of this game)
I did a review on YouTube for this as well - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4WE65bM8xs
In the dark recesses of the neglected indie strategy corner, developer Logic Artists took it upon themselves to defy the unforgiving gods of game development by attempting something truly different. Constructing a historical, yet fictional, turn-based strategy title based around the ancient Spanish era of the Conquistadors, Expeditions: Conquistador explores a setting rarely used by contemporary video games. Astonishingly refreshing and overly infectious, Logic Artists’ seminal title provides the depth, replayability and excitement of a triple-A game without actually being one.
Fantastic as the story and characters are, any turn-based strategy game worth investing in has a robust, detailed and overly fun combat system. Fortunately, Expeditions: Conquistador contains a deceptively deep and strategic system that will punish you for playing dumb and reward you for having patience and foresight. Hex-based, movement and attack actions can be done in any order for any unit, whenever you want. This allows for some excellent combos, flanking attacks and ambushes, depending on how creative you are.
Easily running beyond 35 hours, Expeditions: Conquistador will ceaselessly bombard you with moment after unforgettable moment. With two campaigns tucked away, multiple endings to gain and the ability to lead your expedition on an aggressive or more peaceful path, this game has tremendous replay value.
Expeditions: Conquistador is an absolute must play for any turn-based strategy fan. Not only does it explore a seminal time period that’s neglected in contemporary game culture, but it delivers a detailed and entertaining combat system with a professional narrative anyone can enjoy. With relatable characters that haven’t been this good since the titan that is Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn shipped back in 1999,
Great game but quite old and may not have aged as gracefully as others. Hex based turn strategy game with a good story revoving around making money and making the new world spanish! Ther e are set peice battles included. World map exploration is similiar to Heroes of Might and Magic. I'd call this more of a mercenary warband simulator. The later expeditions games (Viking and Rome) are definately a better experience but this is still a great time if you are OK with aged graphics and some more outdated mechanics. An old gem.
I like turn-based tactical games, especially ones that make good use of terrain. This game is great at this. Each combat encounter is hand-crafted. There are some varied and challenging setups. You can use a limited number of traps and tools during battle, which can significantly alter your strategy. I beat the last battle by starting multiple fires and burning most of my enemies to death, but in another battle I ended up getting burned. There were several battles where I started surrounded before realizing it was an opportunity in disguise.
This is not a game where you build an invincible army and win on the grand strategic level. Even a fully leveled up and equiped party member can be knocked out by a couple enemies if you are not careful. Some skills at level up are boring or weak, but a few are overpowered. Other than traps and tactical tools, there is no gear or loot to speak of. You get the most out of the game by approaching each battle like a puzzle, with some care and thought.
I am also a big fan of adventure games where a party of characters travel an unfamiliar world just to see what they can dig up. I especially like ones where the NPCs interact with each other, so I feel like a member of a group instead of a puppeteer. In this respect, Conquistador is also a commendable first effort. Your expedition members talk over each other, ask you for permission to do things that may not be in your best interest, even develop their own relationships. There is not a lot, but enough for me to feel like I was first among equals instead of a shepard tending his flock. The New World in Conquistador is also grounded in reality but has just enough fantasy fiction to be exciting without being unbelievable.
My biggest complaint about exploration is the top down, restricted view. Being an exploration game, I get you shouldn't scroll all over the game map to see everything at once, but at times I felt suffocated.
If you like this flavor of games, this game is a must buy.
If you can get thru the inital jank shock you find such a gem of a game and a series that delivers on the best crpg content in the business. Owlcat is great and I love them but I LIKE this more
