Forever Evolving

Evolva is a futuristic squad-based action game where your characters can be genetically altered by absorbing the DNA of defeated enemies and the indigenous life of the planet you're trying to save from an alien menace. DNA can also be used to boost character attributes like speed, jumping, weapon power, and armor, giving Evolva a bit of a RPG aspect. The characters morph and change in real time, sprouting claws, fins, and getting bulkier - or thinner - right in front of your eyes. They look pretty cool, and will change appearance as the game goes on, looking vastly different from level to level. It's fun to tinker with your creatures on the mutation screen, seeing how the changes you make will affect their looks and performance. The action in Evolva is pretty straightforward, but the handful of squad-based commands -- move, attack, follow, stay, etc. -- are easy to use and the AI of your team-mates is pretty good, so you don't have to babysit them. The squad control allows you to position your units to gain strategic/positional advantage on enemies, but Evolva will never be confused with Rainbow Six. There are four onscreen characters, and the computer controls the three not being controlled by you. Switching between characters is done with a simple button press, and series of windows at the bottom of the screen allows you to see what computer-directed units are doing. Evolva features about a dozen levels, and the goals are pretty straightfoward: go to "X" position and pick up/destroy something. On the way to your destination lots of fighting ensues. Enemies -- which resemble the bugs from Starship Troopers -- are pretty stupid and will usually just charge straight at you or sit in the distance and lob explosives, but there are usually lots of them attacking at once, so you'll be on your toes. There's a bit of simple puzzle-solving too, albeit not much. Outside of three tough boss fights, Evolva doesn't have a lot of memorable set-pieces, but there's enough going on to keep you busy. One problem with reaching objectives concerns the in-game compass: while it points out which way you need to go, it doesn't take into account the game's twisty, winding terrain, or whether the objective is above or below you. This leads to a bit too much wandering around, trying to figure out just how to get where you want to go. Technically, Evolva has held up fairly well over the years: it was one of the first games to use bump-mapped textures, and the characters and the environments really look other-wordly; you've never seen a game that looks quite like this. The only drawback to the visuals is how "samey" everything starts to feel after a while, and the game uses lots of distance fog to keep you from seeing too much at any one time. The audio is well-done too, with unusual ambient noises and a subtle trance/techno soundtrack adding to the mood. The single-player campaign in Evolva will take around a dozen or so hours to finish. Once that's done there's a multiplayer mode, but it's kind of tacked on: plain deathmatch that allows you to use your characters from the single-player campaign if you like. The handful of maps aren't bad, but Evolva multi-player is mostly an afterthought. Not too many people played Evolva, but it's still pretty fun. Developer Computer Artworks would go on to make The Thing (which has some similarities to Evolva) and then fold up. Unfortunate.

A unique twitch shooter with more depth than I expected

If I were a professional game reviewer, I would likely have given Evolva a 7/10, as many such reviewers did back in 2000. From an objective standpoint, it's a polished but insubstantial product with a few flaws (which I describe below). The reason I'm giving it 5/5 stars here is that I'm not a professional game reviewer, and I had way too much fun with this game to rate it any differently. This game, therefore, has my enthusiastic recommendation. Here's why. 1. The game's world is cohesive, charming, and foreign. The colors, the nonverbal cutscenes and the noises the characters make, the understated techno soundtrack, etc....these elements combine to take you on a vacation from reality like few other games. 2. Twitch-style gameplay with a lot more depth. The "evolution" mechanic is essentially RPG-style stat building. Most of the abilities are weapons drawn from the FPS template, but many of them can be combined in interesting ways. For example, you can charge up your shields and then fire a grenade point-blank, or lead your enemies in one direction and the cloak and run behind them. 3. Simple puzzles that reminded me of portal, because each puzzle presents one element you haven't seen before, and usually requires you to combine a few tricks you've learned already. Along with your constantly-improving stats, these puzzles give the game a feeling that it's building upon itself, rather than just increasing in intensity. Here are the game's flaws: 1. Not enough content. The last 2 levels are pretty weak, there's no "survival" mode, there's no editor, and the multiplayer is bare-bones. 2. Inconsistent learning curve. A lot of people get frustrated in the beginning because they expect a straight-forward shooter, and they don't like the puzzle elements. Towards the end, however, the puzzles disappear, making the game too simple. 3. Some AI gripes. The AI is actually quite good, but can't deal with a couple of situations. For example, there are a few "slippery" areas in the game, and there's even an ability you can level up to make it less slippery, but your genos invariably roll around like pinballs on these areas if you let the AI control them.

A strange, strange game

But it had some nice features that made me remember Elvolva. Your squad of genohunters are basically designed like a dungeon crawler party: a heavy butcher guy, a light speedy one and two that fill the gap between. I liked the way of evolving: you kill an amount of unknown enemies and get their speciality (i.e. fire breath or long jumping and a lot others in the process). With the collected sample DNS every squad member can evolve in two directions. Sometimes it is not reasonable to evolve a squad member, as the new features weaken some older ones. And the base values make some evolutions useless (a heavy fighter will never be a lightweight running scout and such things...). The principle of "the Lost Vikings" (i.e. every character can contribute to the process with his special skill) is implemented but not that strictly, so sometimes a genohunter is enough to deal with everything, sometimes you need a very certain skill combination. But hold on: that was the good part. Like some people wrote before: the handling is not that "evolved" and a map is missing, it can be quite boring to run around and simply following the all-knowing navigation pinpointer. And yes: Evolva lacks a tutorial. But if you like to discover strange games, that can also be fun ... Yet I had a nice time playing the game. So I conclude with 3 stars afterall.

Tedious by today's standards

Some games you can tell when you'll like them immediately or not. This was one of them, and I could tell from the start this game wasn't for me. Never played this game before, hopped in blind after a quick look on GoG. That is to say, this review is based on someone who holds no nostalgia for this game, nor any previous knowledge/biases. Old graphics are not the issue here - the graphics themselves just don't seem well done, period. Your characters are nebulous blobs that change shape and design over time. The gameplay, while passable, relies solely on the somewhat in depth gimmick of evolving your characters based on what you kill. There's some complexity to it but none of it is very intuitive. You run around and kill stuff and depending on what order and how many you kill, you eventually get enough evolution points to go up a notch, or end up avoiding enemies and being overtly picky about what you kill and pick up because of it. It basically boils down to interruptive micromanagement that intrudes on gameplay. The levels take place in an alien world, which is visually great at first but all blends together as the levels go on while the story never actually adds much more. At first it's fun, but there's really not much in the levels that make them remotely interesting to interact with. Short of its one gimmick, the gameplay feels bland (the gimmick itself isn't great), the story is non-existent, the graphics are...not even appealing, there really just isn't anything in this game that makes it worth it unless you have some other former investment in it. Put bluntly, I found it tedious and boring. But for those who know nothing about this game and are looking for some quality good old games to surprise them pleasantly? You're most likely not going to find that here. Buy it on a steep sale if you're interested. This is one of the few purchases that has actually disappointed me enough to write a such a review. Be wary of nostalgic-based reviews.

The best shining gem

I don't know. This game... there is something in this game which made it special. It's a shame there is no games today like this. Evolva is a very simpy action game, with interesting creatures and sight, with mostly acceptable graphics. I mean, for a 2000 game it looks ok. The atmosphere is awesome, the music is still playing in my head, i spent a lot of hours just with the demo back in the day. So yeah, i was pretty excited when i found it on GOG, because this is a true gem, the best shining diamond from all. Something we never experienced before and not after this. This would deserve a good, qualitative remake.
