This is not a game.

This is not a game. It is a art project of some kind that somehow gets sold as a game. If you where to rate it as a game then there can be only one conclusion, it's a complete and utter piece of shit. Everything in this 'game' is horrible, the music, the graphics, the controls, the hit detection, the movement, the combat, the enemies, the dialog, the story, the world, the characters, everything is utterly horribly done. Even as a work of art this thing fails to live up to its own rules if you look at it close enough. It is a interesting idea, but it just doesn't work. I can't recommand this to anyone for any reason. I wish I could give this a lower rating then 1 star. Please do not buy this, this is not a game.

Worth it!

Short & sweet, with myriad of mostly FF7 references. So go play that first, you don't want to get your story spoiled ;) Other than it's shortness, Evoland does exactly what it says: puts you through decades of evolution of the RPG genre in a matter of hours. I really wish they'd put in facts about certain playing aspects; when they first appeared, who implemented them and what was the overall reaction of the gaming community to those drastic gameplay changes. It'd make for a good interactive edutaiment - as it stands right now, Evoland is fun & weirdly nostalgic, with really good music (which is also playing on the FF7 nostalgia, it seems). Overall? As I said, short & sweet.

Really takes you through the history of action/adventure/rpg games. All the changes that seemed revolutionary at the time they came out are there.

A (Side) Trip Through Gaming History

In this game you'll see the evolution of the adventure/RPG series unfold before your eyes, all within the span of a few short hours. Unfortunately, "short" is an apt description of Evoland as a whole. The entire game can be beaten in under five hours from a blind start, and that's if you dawdle. There are some secrets and optional areas to explore and unlock as the game progresses, but those only add another hour or two at most. Don't get me wrong, the game is certainly fun and enjoyable for those few hours, but when all is said and done I was left with the sensation of "That's IT?" I also feel that they could have done more with the premise. As it is it wavers between paying homage to the past and making fun of it, especially in the beginning. There are points where the "evolving" gimmick does become a bona fide game mechanic, such as when you have to navigate mazes with obstacles that can only be conquered in 2D or 3D mode, and it's a nice touch. I just wish there were more situations like that. As it is, the game is too short and perhaps a tad too easy for most dedicated gamers. Overall, Evoland is a fun little game that deserves a four-star rating just as it is. It's well-implemented and engaging for the short time it lasts. But I'm left with the feeling that it could and should have been so much more than it is.
